Official description

An extremely complicated bit of radioactive technology, but emitting a wonderful green light all the same.

Overview

The Plutonium Keychain is a wearable trinket that emits a conspicuous green glow and steadily accumulates radiation on its wearer while equipped. In gameplay terms it functions as a light source with a drawback: wearing it causes passive radiation build-up over time even when the player is not actively using it for illumination.

The item’s in-game description characterizes it as a compact but sophisticated piece of radioactive technology that produces a pleasing green luminescence. This visual effect is the primary reason players equip the keychain despite its radiological cost; it provides continuous illumination in dark environments without consuming conventional power or batteries.

Practical notes and behavior:

  • Effect: while worn the Plutonium Keychain grants persistent green light and applies a continuous, passive radiation accumulation to the carrier.
  • Acquisition: prior to version 0.9.3 the keychain could be obtained through Crafting. It was removed from the game in version 0.9.3, with all former instances of Sensor Keychains replaced by the Sensory Companion.
  • Known bug: in version 0.9.2 (build 12333) light-emitting trinkets including the Plutonium Keychain may fail to produce light after loading a saved game. Unequipping and reequipping the trinket restores the glow.
  • Usage trade-off: the item is valuable for steady hands-free illumination in exploration and base interiors but obliges players to manage the resulting radiation exposure. Consider pairing it with radiation-mitigation measures (armor, consumables, or periodic removal) if available in your build.
  • Replacement: since removal in 0.9.3, players seeking a similar function should use the Sensory Companion or other current light-emitting items available in the same build.
