block-item-source

Overview

Item Source is a block that outputs placed items into adjacent conveyor lanes; it functions as a specialised provider for item transportation networks rather than as an internal storage or crafting component. It appears in multiplayer and single-player maps where automated item distribution is needed, and it’s typically used to feed belts from a fixed supply point or structure that doesn’t itself sit on a conveyor.

Because the block only places items onto a single adjacent tile per output face, a lone Item Source cannot directly attain the maximum throughput that high-capacity conveyors (such as Plastanium or Surge Conveyor) are capable of carrying. To reach those conveyors’ full bandwidth the Item Source must output onto two sides whose flows are then merged into one lane. In practice this means arranging two output faces so their produced items enter separate conveyor lanes that converge, allowing the merged stream to match the higher throughput of advanced belts.

Practical notes and usage tips:

  • Position the Item Source so its output faces align with the intended conveyor directions; orientation matters for which adjacent tiles receive items.
  • When aiming to saturate a single high-speed conveyor, plan for the dual-output merge described above rather than relying on a single-face output.
  • Use multiple Item Sources in tandem when evenly feeding several lines or when needing redundancy; merging outputs from multiple sources can increase supply stability.
  • Because Item Source is not a storage block, ensure upstream logistics or power (if required) maintain the supply you expect it to emit.
