block-mass-driver

Overview

Mass Driver is a ranged transportation block that launches items as high-speed projectiles across the map, allowing long-distance logistics without conventional conveyor belts. It appears in the mid-to-late tech tiers and is commonly used to bridge gaps, bypass terrain, or deliver resources directly to remote refineries and factories. The block converts stored items into bolts that travel in a straight line and can carry any stackable item; on arrival the item is recovered by a receiving Mass Driver or other compatible block.

Throughput and behavior are shaped by its firing rate and bolt mechanics. Under ideal timing (ignoring recoil animation and projectile travel time), a single Mass Driver can achieve an effective maximum throughput of 36 items/sec (calculated as 120 shots × 0.3s per shot). In practice, an entire transport network will bottleneck at the busiest driver, so designers often use branching chains or parallel drivers to balance load. The bolt speed is 41.25 tiles/sec, which determines travel time and the window for interception.

Mass Driver bolts interact with the world in distinctive ways. They can be intercepted by enemy units, force fields, or point-defense systems; when intercepted the bolt deals 75 damage to the interceptor and any items contained by the bolt are voided (destroyed) upon despawn. Bolts do not collide with blocks, so structures do not stop them. In certain builds the projectile may generate secondary effects (explosion, fire, or electricity) depending on the item being transported — an evolution introduced in later updates.

Practical notes and strategies:

  • Place a receiving Mass Driver or compatible catchment near target structures to ensure items are recovered; otherwise items may be lost when bolts despawn or are intercepted.
  • Use multiple drivers or branch the supply line to avoid a single driver becoming the throughput bottleneck.
  • Because bolts can be shot down, routing mass drivers away from hostile patrol paths or protecting lanes with defenses reduces losses; point-defense emplacements can intercept hostile projectiles but will also intercept friendly bolts.
  • Items that cause special projectile effects should be handled with care: in some versions transported items can create explosions, fire, or electricity on impact — transport of volatile materials may damage nearby structures or units.
  • Bolt speed makes timing-sensitive deliveries possible; calculate travel time when coordinating with timed production or unloading sequences.
  • Mass Drivers are not blocked by terrain or buildings, making them ideal for bridging impassable areas, but their visibility to enemies and vulnerability to interception mean they are best used with protective measures when crossing hostile regions.

History: the Mass Driver was introduced in early builds and has received buffs and behavioral changes over time, including a health increase in a V7 release and the addition of item-dependent projectile effects in a later V8 beta.
