block-payload-void

Overview

Payload Void is a utility block introduced early in Mindustry's Version 7.0 pre-alpha (Build 128) alongside the Payload Source. It serves as a sink for payload-carrying units and logistics, deliberately destroying payloads that are fed into it rather than storing or forwarding them. This makes it useful for managing excess items or deliberately disposing of particular payload types in automated systems.

Unlike containers or conveyors that keep or route resources, the Payload Void consumes payloads instantly on receipt. It is typically used where unwanted or surplus payloads would otherwise clog production lines, interfere with routing logic, or be expensive to transport back to a base. Because it removes payloads rather than returning them to the game economy, players should treat it as a last resort for disposal rather than a way to recycle materials.

Practical notes and strategies:

  • Place Payload Void at ends of routing loops or alongside overflow outputs from sorters and routers to prevent backups.
  • Combine with payload filters or router logic to only destroy specific payload types while directing the rest to storage or processing.
  • Use in large automated factories where continuous fluid or payload generation can otherwise overwhelm storage capacity.
  • Be mindful that destroying valuable payloads is irreversible; integrate visual indicators or logic gates to prevent accidental loss of scarce items.
  • According to the release note, it was added together with the Payload Source, suggesting paired use: the Source can produce payloads for testing or controlled disposal while the Void handles removal.
