Overview

The Silicon Arc Furnace is an advanced production block that converts sand and graphite into silicon at a high rate. Introduced in Build 136 and later adjusted in Build 149 to draw 300 power units/second (down from 360), it occupies a mid-to-late tech niche: faster and more power-hungry than simpler silicon producers, and intended for factories that can supply steady high power and graphite input.

The furnace accepts sand and graphite as inputs and produces silicon much more quickly than the basic Silicon Smelter. Compared with the Silicon Smelter, the Arc Furnace uses sand at a 1:1 sand→silicon ratio (versus the Smelter’s 2:1) and delivers roughly 3.2× the throughput, while requiring graphite instead of coal and drawing significantly more power (about ten times more in reported comparisons). When set against the Silicon Crucible, the Arc Furnace and Crucible consume the same amount of sand per silicon output overall; the Crucible, however, also requires pyratite as a third ingredient, yields about 1.11× the output rate at neutral affinities, and uses approximately 20% less power than the Arc Furnace in those comparisons.

Practical notes for use and integration:

  • Provide a stable, high-power source (power draw standardized to 300/s in recent builds) and ensure backup capacity for peak production or affinity modifiers.
  • Use automated item routing to feed graphite and sand continuously; the Arc Furnace’s high throughput benefits from buffered supply lines and fast conveyor/loader setups.
  • If power is constrained, consider using Silicon Smelters or Crucibles depending on resource availability: Smelters are cheaper power-wise and use coal, Crucibles trade extra ingredient cost (pyratite) for slightly better throughput and lower power draw.
  • Position Arc Furnaces near graphite production (e.g., graphite presses or refineries) to minimize transport bottlenecks; clustering multiple furnaces with shared power infrastructure improves overall efficiency.
  • Because of its high output, downstream silicon storage and consumer buildings (fabricators, silicon-consuming assemblies) should be scaled accordingly to avoid buildup or wasted throughput.

The Arc Furnace is best chosen when map resources provide ample graphite and the player can support its elevated power demand in exchange for rapid silicon production.
