block-lustre
Overview
Lustre is a heavy power-dependent turret that fires concentrated nitrogen rounds. It was added in Build 136 and received balance tweaks in Build 147 (notably the addition of a high power draw and increased nitrogen ammo damage). Unlike turrets that consume items,
Lustre requires no item input apart from nitrogen ammo generated by electric heaters and electrical power to operate, which allows flexible placement as long as you can support its energy and carbide (for construction) costs.
The turret deals very high single-target damage with its nitrogen beam, making it excellent at cutting down individual high-HP enemies and strong armored targets. Because it consumes its stated nitrogen only while firing, it can coexist with refabricators or other continuous nitrogen consumers without necessarily starving unit production when not continuously active. Its slow rotation and focus on single targets mean it is vulnerable to swarms and to missile-heavy or fast-flanking attacks; multiple-angle assaults or lots of small units can overwhelm its tracking and throughput.
Lustre also performs poorly versus shields such as those used by
Collaris and is susceptible to long-range unit missiles.
Practical usage and tips:
- Place Lustres where they can focus on chokepoints or isolated high-priority targets rather than open, multi-approach fields where swarms will exploit the slow tracking.
- Because they need no item input besides nitrogen generation, you can deploy Lustres far from logistic lines as long as you provide electric heaters (or other nitrogen sources) and sufficient power; they are good for remote static defenses.
- Support Lustres with Build Towers or additional turrets to cover their blind directions and to handle massed light units that bypass the
Lustre’s single-target focus. - Be mindful of their heavy power consumption introduced in later builds: batteries, capacitors, or dedicated power plants are required to keep them firing when needed.
- In some situations it can help to manually trigger the
Lustre so it is already oriented toward the incoming path, allowing it to begin firing earlier on the first enemies. - Pair with anti-missile or anti-swarm defenses (flak, point defense) to compensate for
Lustre’s weakness to missiles and rapid small-unit attacks.
Overall,
Lustre excels as a focused anti-armor/anti-boss emplacement in a defended network but should be integrated with supporting turrets and power infrastructure to mitigate its rotation limits, swarm vulnerability, and substantial energy requirements.
