Overview

Cows are the female counterpart of Bulls. They are passive livestock that can be found in the wild, domesticated by the player, and kept for farming and breeding. Wild Cows spawn in Forest, Plains, and Swamp biomes, and they can also be purchased from Villages, visiting Farmers, and visiting Animal Keepers. Cows sold by Farmers and Animal Keepers are already tame when bought.

A Cow drops Leather and Beef when killed. It can also be milked with a Bucket, making it useful even when kept alive. Wild Cows can be led with ropes and fenced in, which makes it easy to create a pen for breeding or resource production. They produce one unit of milk on a daily production cycle.

To tame a Cow, feed it Wheat by hand over time or keep it near a Feeding Trough stocked with Wheat. Once tame, it can be bred with a Bull as long as both animals are tame and ready to breed. The breeding interval is 24 minutes, and maturation takes 32 minutes.

A few practical notes are worth keeping in mind:

  • Cows are peaceful, but attacking village Cows will enrage settlers and turn them hostile.
  • Keeping Cows in a fenced pen helps control breeding and makes milking easier.
  • Because they are a source of both meat and leather, Cows are useful early on for basic survival supplies as well as steady livestock management.
