Solar Panel

Overview
Solar Panel is a small, passive power generator that produces electricity from daylight. It requires no fuel or maintenance once built and yields a modest, time-of-day-dependent output that makes it ideal for low-cost, always-on power needs and for jump-starting other generators at the beginning of a cycle.
Solar Panels produce power only while the map is in daylight; output falls to zero at night or during darkness-producing weather events. Because of this limitation they are most effective when paired with energy storage: a battery smooths out supply over night or during storms and enables consistently powered systems such as Illuminators for lighting. In campaign maps and maps with weather events a battery is required to prevent outages; on open maps without weather a sufficiently large array of Solar Panels plus one or more batteries can supply sustained power for light industry and basic defenses.
Solar Panels are commonly used to provide the initial charge needed to start generator rigs that require an initial input before they become self-sustaining. Examples include jump-starting a
Steam Generator paired with a
Water Extractor or powering a
Differential Generator while its
Cryofluid Mixer spins up. This role is advantageous because Solar Panels consume no resources after construction and require no player attention to restart a rig that was rebuilt or interrupted. Combustion Generators can perform the same utility but consume fuel;
Thorium Reactors do not require a jump-start because they can run briefly without coolant and provide their own startup power.
Practical notes and strategies:
- Always pair Solar Panels with batteries when operating systems that must run continuously across night or weather cycles. The battery should be sized to cover expected downtime.
- Solar Panels are a cost-effective way to run Illuminators and other low-power consumer buildings without ongoing resource expenditure.
- Use Solar Panels to power logic networks tied to the day/night cycle; their output naturally encodes daylight presence and can simplify time-based automation.
- Arrange multiple Solar Panels to scale output; place batteries centrally so fewer power conduits are needed to distribute stored energy.
- Because build cost and base output were adjusted in updates, the unit is especially cheap and efficient relative to earlier versions: reduced silicon cost and increased base power make Solar Panels a strong early- to mid-game power option.
