Tracks were originally introduced in version 0.21.18. They became craftable, pick-upable, and available in biomes beyond forest caves in version 0.21.21. Their stack size was increased to 250 in version 0.21.22, and version 0.21.28 fixed items sinking through tracks when they were placed on liquid.
In practice, minecart tracks are meant to be laid out as connected routes so the player can move efficiently between distant areas. Since they can be placed on any terrain tile, they are useful for extending transportation lines across varied terrain and through cave systems. A complete rail setup is especially valuable for long-distance travel, resource runs, and linking bases or points of interest.
