Overview

Metalsmith is a Timberborn building associated with metal parts in the game. The in-game Metalsmith appears in the gallery as an example of an industrial building and is shown both in use and presented in dedicated builds. The Metalsmith is the focus for metal-related workflows, and its presence in a settlement supplies whatever metal-related output the game currently requires.

As of the current game state, the only use for metal parts is to construct buildings, so a single Metalsmith is sufficient for most settlements. Players commonly provision one Metalsmith to meet the metal-part demand for construction rather than operating multiple facilities in parallel. The building therefore functions primarily as a source of components used in long-term expansion and construction projects.

  • Build and operate a single Metalsmith to satisfy metal-part needs for building construction; additional Metalsmiths provide diminishing returns while consuming resources and space.
  • Place the Metalsmith where it can access supply lines for raw materials and where its output can be easily transported to construction sites.
  • Consider dedicating a compact industrial area or a single production district to house the Metalsmith alongside related production buildings; gallery examples show dedicated builds that integrate the Metalsmith visually and logistically.
  • Monitor the pace of construction projects and only expand metal production if future updates or mods introduce new metal-part uses.

The Metalsmith is thematically connected to traditional smithing. Historically, the first known smiths who worked iron included the Hittites, who made iron tools around 1500 BC. Shaping iron requires very high temperatures because hot iron cools quickly, giving a smith only a few seconds to hammer it before reheating is necessary. Traditional smiths used a forge burning coal or charcoal to reach these temperatures, and a bellows supplied air to the fire to increase heat; these historical details reflect the real-world craft that inspired the in-game Metalsmith.
