Spear
Overview
A spear is a melee polearm weapon class used for sweeping thrusts and reach attacks. It appears as an equippable weapon that fills a standard melee slot and is obtainable early to mid game from crafting stations or found in chests and enemy drops depending on the world. Spears occupy the weapon role alongside swords, bows, daggers, and other types; they are valued for extended reach and hitbox coverage, making them effective against groups and enemies that are slightly out of melee range.
Spears are crafted at basic crafting stations such as the

Practical usage and mechanics:
- Reach and spacing: the spear’s longer reach lets you strike enemies before they close to sword range; use it to poke at opponents while maintaining safer distance.
- Sweeping/thrust patterns: spears often have linear thrusts or wide arcs that can hit multiple targets in a line or cone; position yourself to maximize multi-target hits.
- Pairing with movement: spears reward hit-and-retreat play; poke, back away, and re-engage rather than standing toe-to-toe.
- Tool and tier interactions: some world objects and higher-tier foes require stronger tools and weapons to break or damage; upgrading your anvil and crafting higher-tier spears increases damage and durability where applicable.
- Enchantments and upgrades: have a Mage enchant important spears to overcome progression spikes. Good enchantments make a spear viable for repeated boss attempts.
- Loot and trading: villagers and traders sometimes sell weapons or materials; starting a settlement with relevant traders increases access to specific gear. Check chests in dungeons and biome-specific structures for better spears.
- Complementary items: combine spear use with potions, armor sets (which may grant bonuses when full sets are equipped), and trinkets for sustained survivability. Potions and trinkets are particularly useful when facing bosses or dungeon wizards.
- Combat roles for settlers: when recruiting or assigning settlers, be aware they use their profession equipment and will act within defend zones; a well-equipped settler with a polearm can help defend your settlement perimeter.
Do not forget general progression advice: use crafting guides and inventory filters to discover spear recipes once you have required materials; explore underground with ladders and improved tools to find rarer components; and visit or recruit traders to obtain weapons or materials you cannot craft yet.
