Overview

The Lumberjack Flag is a 1×1 production building that assigns nearby beaver workers to fell trees and collect logs. It defines an area in which Lumberjacks operate and automatically dispatches assigned beavers to cut standing trees, including submerged trees (provided access stairs lead down to the water level). The flag pairs naturally with Foresters, who plant the trees Lumberjacks harvest; placing a Lumberjack Flag near a Forester allows both to cover the same planting/harvesting area.

The Lumberjack Flag’s area of effect extends from the block adjacent to its entrance: 20 blocks left and right, 21 blocks behind, and 18 blocks ahead, forming the region in which beavers will seek and fell trees. Trees of all types take 1.2 hours base time to cut; this time decreases as Lumberjacks gain higher Work Speed from improved Well-Being. Each successful felling produces Logs for use in construction, fuel, and crafting.

Beaver Lumberjacks can suffer the Chipped Teeth ailment. Chipped Teeth reduce a beaver’s Well-Being by 1 and cause a 75% reduction in successful log yield, meaning felling attempts fail to produce logs three out of four times. Chipped Teeth are relatively rare and can be cured quickly by visiting a Teeth Grindstone. Mechanized workers (bots) do not get Chipped Teeth.

Practical usage and strategy:

  • Place Lumberjack Flags adjacent to Foresters so planting and harvesting ranges overlap. This keeps wood production efficient and minimizes worker travel time.
  • Ensure every District that contains Lumberjacks has at least one Teeth Grindstone to cure Chipped Teeth when they occur.
  • Lumberjacks can fell underwater trees; when covering submerged trees, place the Flag on dry land within range and provide stairs to the sunken level so beavers can access the trees.
  • Monitor worker Well-Being to improve Work Speed and reduce tree-cutting time, increasing log throughput.
  • The Lumberjack Flag has a capacity of 20 beavers since Early Access and replaces the obsolete tree-cutting function of the older Labor Flag.

Notes and flavor:

  • The in-game flavor references The Lumberjack Song by Monty Python.
  • Lumberjacks are designed to simulate the physical hazards and skill of felling trees; in real-world terms, work pace and tree size affect how long a single tree takes to fell.
