Steam Engine

Overview
The
Steam Engine is a mid-to-late game power building that converts
Logs and
Water into electrical power for a connected power grid. It occupies a fixed footprint and connects to the grid only through the central block on each side; power does not pass through its entrance tile. The
Steam Engine requires
Hauling Post delivery of both fuel (Logs) and
Water and maintains an internal fuel buffer that allows it to continue running for limited periods without immediate resupply.
Steam Engines consume fuel at a constant rate when operating, delivering full rated power while consuming
Logs even if the grid's power demand is lower than maximum output. If the connected grid has no demand, a
Steam Engine will stop operating to conserve fuel; any partially consumed fuel remains at its current level while stopped. Haulers will remove unspent goods from the building if it is paused, so ensure the building is active when you want it to retain stockpiled inputs. A full internal buffer provides a runtimespan of just over two in-game days at normal consumption.
Practical usage and strategy:
- Supply: Always pair Steam Engines with dedicated Hauling Posts and sufficient hauler capacity.
Logs and
Water must be delivered by haulers rather than by direct placement. - Fuel needs: A single
Steam Engine requires roughly 10
Oak (logs) per in-game day to run continuously; provisioning about this amount per day (including a safety margin) keeps it operating full-time. This figure accounts for minor inefficiencies in logging and transport. - Placement: Remember that electrical connections only attach to the center blocks on each long face of the building; leave appropriate space for power lines and for haulers to access the entrance.
- Buffering: Use nearby storage (log yards, water towers) and route capacity to smooth delivery spikes. Because the engine consumes at full rate while producing, ensure the grid has demand or use accumulator/buffer strategies to avoid wasting fuel.
- Pausing behavior: If you pause the building or the grid has zero demand and the engine stops, haulers may remove unspent inputs if the building is paused—manage pauses carefully to avoid losing supplies.
- Tech and costs: The
Steam Engine replaced the older Engine in past updates and gained a
Water requirement. Its construction costs and internal storage changed across versions (notably a shift in metal parts and halved log storage in an earlier update), so verify requirements in the current build before construction.
