Overview

Prototype Recovery was a limited-time community mission in Astroneer tied to the Project CHEER Recovery effort. Players contributed by finding special mission items scattered across the surface and underground in several planets, then turning them in at the EXO Request Platform. The mission rewarded both individual progress and a shared community total, with players earning 500 Bytes per delivered package.

Recovered items were packed into color-coded packages based on their recovery value. Bronze packages awarded 5 recovery points, silver packages awarded 15, and gold packages awarded 60. During the final week of the mission, recovery points were doubled, making late contributions more efficient. The mission also let players contribute beyond the thresholds needed for personal rewards, with extra points still counting toward the community total.

  • Personal rewards were unlocked at specific recovery point totals, including the Frost Palette at 400 points and the Frost Visor and Frost Mask at 2,500 points.
  • The community reward was the Christmas Hat, unlocked at 100,000,000 community recovery points.
  • Players could continue contributing to the charity campaign after the mission itself ended, through the rest of 2020.
  • The event was the first mission of its kind in Astroneer and supported Seattle Children’s Hospital through Extra Life.
  • SES donated $5,000 for every 50 million points submitted through the EXO Request Platform, up to a total of $20,000.

The mission’s total contribution reached 203,929,145 points by January 20, 2020. Individual players could also exceed the point totals required for rewards, with the highest single-player contribution recorded at 211,430 points.
