Overview

Big Larva is a hostile creature found in the Clay Caves, where it appears as a larger and tougher variant of the standard Larva. It is associated with the Larva faction and is significantly more dangerous than the smaller version, with high health, strong close-range damage, and a tendency to control the battlefield by destroying nearby objects.

Big Larvae are notable for their aggression toward environmental objects rather than simply chasing the player. They actively seek out and destroy torches, and will also target dirt walls, turf walls, sand walls, clay walls, and furniture. Lamps are treated differently from torches: they are only broken when the Big Larva is standing on a nearby tile. In practice, this makes any light source or obstacle in their path a potential target, and they can also attack crops and mushrooms if they reach them. They ignore mining requirements when damaging walls, meaning that even structures normally protected by tool strength can still be broken down over time.

Their behavior changes depending on distance and pathing. A Big Larva will not continue object-destruction behavior if it is too far from the player, and it will also stop attacking objects if it has no route to the target, such as when a lit path is unavailable. Because it prioritizes light sources when both a player and a light source are nearby, torches can be used deliberately as bait. Placing torches rapidly near a Big Larva can keep its attention away from the player or base defenses for a short time.

When fighting one early in the game, mobility matters more than trading hits. Big Larvae deal heavy damage at close range and pause briefly before attacking, so a hit-and-retreat pattern is effective. A Tin Sword is usually sufficient to defeat one in a small number of hits when first exploring the Clay Caves. Since they can also damage furniture and break through weak walls, any base or temporary shelter near their territory should be lined with walls they cannot destroy, or Chrysalis should be removed to reduce the chance of them chewing through defenses.

  • Stronger Big Larvae exist as a variant that spawns only in the Larva Hive, with noticeably higher stats.
  • Big Larva will seek out and destroy torches before many other objects.
  • They can attack walls and furniture, and should not be left near exposed base structures.
  • Wearing both the Larva Helm and Larva Chest allows the player to talk to a Big Larva without being attacked, and it may respond with one of several short lines.
