Tropics Undergrove Fern Seed

Overview

Ferns are a plant found in the Tropics, the Undergrove, and on Island Reef. They can also naturally appear on tropical grass blocks in any biome. When cut, a fern may drop Fern Seeds or Tropical Grass Seeds, making it a useful source for both replanting and gathering tropical plant materials.

A Fern Seed can be planted in dirt or sand in any biome and grows to full height after 2 days. The Plant Book can be used on the plant to check its maturity; once fully grown, the book no longer displays data. Fern Seeds can also be reproduced by placing a seed in a Flower Bed or Flower Pot that is attached to or next to an empty one, allowing players to propagate more seeds without harvesting wild ferns.

Ferns can be turned into a Tree Fern, which resembles the ones found in the Undergrove. To do this, bury a Fertilizer Bag in the ground next to a fully grown fern and then sleep to trigger the change. When a Tree Fern is chopped down, it does not drop items and the fern seed is not returned.

  • Ferns are one of the few plants that can yield either Fern Seeds or Tropical Grass Seeds when harvested.
  • They grow in multiple environments and can be planted in both dirt and sand, so they are easy to cultivate in most farms.
  • Reproduction through Flower Beds and Flower Pots makes it possible to mass-produce Fern Seeds.
  • Tree Ferns are a one-way transformation and are not a renewable source of drops.
