agriculture

Agriculture in Dinkum covers growing crops, watering fields, and raising animals for steady food and materials. It becomes a major source of supplies once you have a farm set up, and it scales from simple hand-watering to fully automated layouts.

Getting Started

To begin farming, you need to unlock the right license, settle Rain, buy farm tools, and prepare land for crops. A basic farm also benefits from fences, fertilizer, and a watering setup early on.

Farming setup checklist

  • Get the license you need for farming and irrigation.
  • Have Rain living in town.
  • Buy farming tools from the Greenhouse.
  • Prepare fences to manage crops or animals.
  • Clear and level the land.
  • Make fertilizer.
  • Craft a Sprinkler and a Water Tank as soon as possible.

The Greenhouse

The Greenhouse is the farming shop run by Rain. It opens from AM11:00 to PM4:00 and is closed on Friday.

It sells farming tools and crop seeds. Seed stock changes with the seasons, so the shop is a key place to check whenever you want to expand your fields or start a new seasonal crop.

Planting Crops

Crops are planted by holding the seed item and using it on the ground where you want it to grow. If the ground is dirt, you can usually plant there.

For early farms, placing fields near water is the easiest approach because you can fill a watering can quickly. Later, irrigation removes much of that daily manual work.

Irrigation and Watering

The Irrigation Licence lets you craft farming infrastructure.

Irrigation Licence levels

Sprinkler coverage

  • Sprinkler waters a 3×3 area.
  • Advanced Sprinkler waters a 5×5 area.

Sprinklers make it much easier to lay out efficient farms, especially when combined with Water Tanks. A good farm is usually built around keeping crop tiles inside sprinkler range so you spend less time watering by hand.

Early and Midgame Farm Planning

Early farming works best near a water source, especially before you can rely on Water Tanks and sprinklers. As your farm grows, you can organize plots however you like for efficiency or appearance.

A practical midgame approach is to shape fields around sprinkler coverage rather than forcing every crop into a single block. This makes it easier to expand while keeping the farm tidy and productive.

Best Crops and Core Produce

Wheat

Wheat is one of the best crops to mass-produce. It can be grown throughout the year, which makes it a reliable staple crop.

Wheat is also especially valuable because it can be processed into Flour, and Flour is used in many recipes. A Grain Mill turns 4 Wheat into 1 Flour, so planning ahead for large batches is worthwhile.

Sugar Cane

Sugar Cane is important because it can also be processed through the Grain Mill to make sugar, which appears in several recipes.

Potatoes

Potatoes are a useful seasonal crop and can be grown in Spring.

Mighty Spread

Mighty Spread is a summer crop made from seeds found randomly in the Deep Mine. It requires the Farming Licence and a Food Modeller, and it is only growable in Summer.

Animal Breeding

Raising animals is another major part of agriculture. To breed animals, you need the Animal Breeding Licence, which becomes available after unlocking Handling Licence 3 and Processing Licence 2.

Animal Breeding Licence rewards

  • Animal Breeding Licence 1 unlocks the Egg Incubator recipe for breeding Chooks.
  • Animal Breeding Licence 2 unlocks Duff Dust from Irwin's Barn, which improves fertilised egg chances and supports breeding for Vombat, Pleep, and Burrowcoots.

Animals need regular care. If they are not fed, some production stops the next day.

Useful livestock

  • Chooks provide eggs.
  • Vombat provides milk.
  • Sheep-like animals provide wool, which can be processed into cloth.

Wool, Cloth, and Animal Products

If you plan to raise animals, wool-bearing livestock are especially valuable because their wool can be spun into cloth. Cloth is needed in large quantities for important buildings, including the Airport.

Wool is collected from an adult animal using shears, and each adult can produce wool once per day. Feed the animal every day so you can keep collecting.

Food Production From Farming

Agriculture supports cooking as much as it supports raw food. Many recipes rely on farm products, livestock products, or processed ingredients like Flour and Sugar.

Common farm and animal ingredients

  • Flour from Wheat
  • Sugar from Sugar Cane
  • Eggs from Chooks
  • Milk from Vombat
  • Wool from wool-bearing animals
  • Potatoes from farming
  • Bush Lime from Bush Lime trees

Multi-ingredient dishes

  • Lamington uses Flour, Sugar, Coconut, Chicken Egg, and Milk.
  • Pavlova uses Flour, Sugar, Coconut, and a Large Chicken Egg.
  • Fruit Salad uses Bush Lime, Apple, Banana, and Quandong.
  • Fish & Chips uses Flake and Potatoes, plus Bush Lime as a recommended ingredient in the source list.
  • Mighty Sandwich uses Bread, which is made from Flour.
  • Mighty Spread is a specialty crop-based ingredient used for cooking.

Daily Farm Routine

A successful farm needs regular upkeep.

Daily priorities

  • Water your crops.
  • Feed and care for your animals.
  • Collect animal products.
  • Keep up with resident requests and daily tasks so your farming progression stays efficient.

Practical Farm Priorities

For long-term efficiency, Wheat is the most dependable crop to scale up because it grows year-round and feeds into many recipes through Flour. If you are also raising animals, wool-producing livestock are a top priority because wool becomes Cloth, which is required for major progression-related construction.

A strong agriculture setup usually combines:

  • a year-round crop like Wheat,
  • a processed staple like Flour,
  • livestock for eggs, milk, or wool,
  • and an irrigation layout that reduces daily watering work.
