Overview
Gamma is a mobile combat unit introduced in Version 6.0 of Mindustry. It is the third in the letter‑series of units (Alpha,
Beta,
Gamma) and is designed for short to mid‑range skirmishing. Its primary armament consists of twin homing missile weapons that fire in volleys and have limited travel distance, making
Gamma effective at chasing and finishing targets but less suited for long‑range bombardment.
Each weapon fires 2 bursts of 4 shots at a time (effectively 2x4 shots/sec) dealing 11 damage per hit and possessing 3° inaccuracy. The missiles home onto targets and deal only 1% damage to buildings (so an 11 damage missile deals 0.11 to structures), which emphasizes the unit’s anti‑unit role. Bullets now despawn after traveling 30 tiles, a behavior finalized in recent updates; their velocity is affected by the unit’s movement (bullet velocity interacts with unit velocity per Version 8.0 changes), and shooting backward no longer grants extended lifetime.
Gamma’s behavior and balance have been adjusted several times since introduction: its effective range was reduced from 31 to 30 blocks, bullet speed was standardized into tiles/second, and player‑control mining interactions were added (it can mine sand if controlled and the "Double‑tap/click to mine" option is enabled). Command limits that once applied to the unit were removed.
Practical notes for use and tactics:
Gamma excels at hunting and finishing enemy mobile units because of homing missiles and high per‑shot damage against non‑building targets.- The weapons do minimal building damage; use other units or artillery when engaging structures.
- Limited bullet travel (30 tiles) requires closing distance to maintain consistent damage; avoid attempting extreme outrange shots.
- Movement affects projectile speed; firing while moving forward increases effective range and closing speed, while firing backward reduces it.
- Controlled
Gamma units can mine sand with the proper input option, offering utility outside combat when manually operated.
Gamma’s sprite recalls the discontinued Glaive upgrade from earlier versions, continuing the thematic design of Greek‑lettered unit progression.
