Overview
The
Farmhouse is a basic agricultural building that supports crop production by providing dedicated workplace space for Farmers and storing seeds and harvested crops. It appears early in progression and anchors small-scale farming operations before more advanced processing buildings become available. Farmhouses are essential for maintaining a steady food supply because many crops require farmer labor to plant and harvest, and some early crops (notably kohlrabi) are edible raw and can sustain a settlement immediately.
Farmhouses house Farmers who perform planting, tending and harvesting tasks for nearby fields. They also provide local storage for harvested crops so transported goods are available to the population or to downstream processors. Building multiple Farmhouses close to distinct fields reduces travel time for Farmers and makes crop cycles more efficient; farms are farmer‑intensive, so population planning must account for that labor demand.
Practical notes and interactions:
- Early-game focus should be on kohlrabi because it matures quickly (3 days), yields 2 kohlrabies and is edible raw, allowing survival before processing chains exist.
- As power and advanced buildings come online, Farmhouses feed processors: cassava (matures in 5 days) is processed in a Fermenter into fermented cassava; canola seeds (9 days, 3 seeds) go to an Oil Press to make canola oil; soybeans (8 days, 2 soybeans) combine with canola oil in a Fermenter to make fermented soybeans.
- Late-game crop processing (Corn and
Eggplant) requires Food Factories and additional inputs: corn (10 days, 2 corn) and eggplant (12 days, 3 eggplants) are processed in Food Factories that also consume logs and, for eggplants, canola oil. - Farmhouses are most effective when paired with field layout and pathing that minimize travel; place Farmhouses adjacent to fields and ensure road access so Farmers spend less time walking and more time working.
- When unlocking irrigation or badwater diversion technologies, consider introducing mangrove cultivation for water management and soil benefits where appropriate.

Design Farmhouses into a staged food plan: use them to secure immediate raw-food needs (kohlrabi), then scale into powered processing chains (cassava, canola, soybean) and finally Food Factories (corn, eggplant) as resources and technology permit.
