Overview

The gristmill is a Folktails-era processing building that grinds Wheat or Cattail Root into Wheat Flour or Cattail Flour. It functions as a Power food building and transmits power to adjacent structures, allowing food-processing districts to avoid complicated Power Shaft layouts. The building’s entrance is located on the far right side of one of its long sides.

Gristmill output is an intermediate Ingredient: Wheat Flour and Cattail Flour require further processing in the Bakery to become final food items. A gristmill producing Wheat Flour supplies enough flour for two bakeries making Bread or three bakeries making Maple Pastry. A gristmill producing Cattail Flour provides enough for two bakeries that produce Cattail Crackers. Because of this dependency, gristmills should be placed close to bakeries to minimize haul distance and keep ingredient supplies steady.

Gristmills grind either Wheat or Cattail Root; the game allows the player to select which flour the mill produces. The building transmits power rather than needing power shafts, so it integrates well into compact processing clusters where both power and ingredient flow are required.

Historically in the game, gristmills were introduced in the Open Alpha, later given the ability to choose between Wheat Flour and Cattail Flour in Update 1, and were made Folktails-exclusive in Update 4.

  • Place gristmills adjacent to or within short hauling distance of bakeries to avoid ingredient shortages and reduce worker travel time.
  • Use the gristmill’s power transmission to feed small bakery clusters without running extra power shafts.
  • Match the gristmill’s flour output to your bakery production: Wheat Flour supports more Bread/Maple Pastry throughput per mill than Cattail Flour supports Cattail Crackers.
  • The building’s right-side entrance affects pathing; orient access and roads accordingly when planning layout.
