Wheat

Overview
Wheat is a crop harvested from fully grown wheat plants. Each mature crop yields 3 Wheat, making it a straightforward raw agricultural good rather than a finished food source.
By itself, Wheat has no direct use. It must be processed in a

A few practical points make Wheat fields more reliable:
- Wheat is slow-growing compared with many other crops, so replacing existing fields with Wheat can create a food shortage if the new harvest is not ready before stored food runs low.
- Food types contribute to Population Well-Being, and beavers try to vary what they eat to maintain higher Well-Being. Wheat can therefore support broader food production, but it should not be the only planned crop unless the rest of the food chain is already stable.
- Wheat is especially sensitive to drought and can die quickly if it loses water, so fields should be placed closer to a riverbank or upstream water access than more resilient crops.
- Since Wheat is an input for flour, it is most efficient when paired with a steady Gristmill workflow and downstream food production.
Wheat also fits into the wider Well-Being system introduced as part of the overhaul of the old Needs system. Well-Being is tracked at individual, district, and global levels, and higher scores grant bonuses such as improved work speed, movement speed, growth speed, and life expectancy. Because food variety contributes to those scores, Wheat is indirectly valuable even before it is processed, as part of the broader diet that helps sustain district health and productivity.
For progression, Well-Being is also tied to faction unlocks: reaching a Well-Being of 15 while playing as the
Folktails is required to unlock the
Iron Teeth faction. That makes reliable food infrastructure, including Wheat-based production chains, relevant not only for survival but also for long-term advancement.
