Overview

Rotten Food is an item representing food that has fully spoiled. It appears in the game as the end state of perishable food: when a food item completes its decay cycle it becomes Rotten Food. The in-world description characterizes it as very expired food that has likely been left uneaten for too long.

Rotten Food has three primary roles in gameplay. It is a salvage resource, a crafting ingredient, and a consumable with negative effects. At a Repair and Salvage Station Rotten Food can be scrapped to produce Bio Scrap, allowing players to recover useful materials from spoiled provisions. Rotten Food is also explicitly used as an ingredient in the recipe for Darkwater Bait. Eating Rotten Food is possible, but doing so makes the player character Sick; it therefore functions as an emergency but harmful food source rather than a normal nourishment option.

Practical notes and interactions:

  • Generation: Rotten Food is obtained when any food item decays completely. It is the deterministic result of the food spoilage mechanic rather than a separately spawned pickup.
  • Salvage: Use a Repair and Salvage Station to convert Rotten Food into Bio Scrap. Treat Rotten Food as a low-value recycling source when preserving fresh food is no longer feasible.
  • Crafting: Keep Rotten Food on hand if you intend to craft Darkwater Bait; it serves as a required ingredient for that item.
  • Consumption: Consuming Rotten Food induces the Sick status. Do not eat Rotten Food unless the consequences of being Sick are acceptable in the current situation or no other food is available.
  • Inventory management: Preventing food from reaching the Rotten Food state (by consuming, storing, or otherwise preserving perishable items) is generally preferable because fresh food provides benefits without the penalties associated with Rotten Food. When excess perishables exist, plan to either use them for crafting before they decay or accept conversion into Bio Scrap afterward.
  • Role in economy/loops: Rotten Food provides a predictable sink for expired provisions and a source of Bio Scrap and specific bait-crafting materials; it is useful for resource recovery in base operations where food waste would otherwise be purely negative.

The item should be treated as a disposable byproduct of spoilage with niche utility: recycling into Bio Scrap and serving as a component for Darkwater Bait, while carrying a clear consumption penalty (Sick) if used as emergency food.
