Early Game Guide: Efficient Start, Survival & Wall of Flesh Prep
Early game covers the first hours of a Terraria run: getting basic tools, survival, mobility, early bosses, and preparing for Pre-Hardmode → Hardmode progression. Good early-game habits speed up everything that comes after: exploration, crafting, money, and safely entering Hardmode.
First priorities (first spawn to basic safety)
- Pick up your starter tools (
Wood or iron-tier items depending on mode) and immediately gather wood, stone, and basic resources.
- Build a simple base with at least one enclosed NPC house to attract the Merchant and other NPCs later. Use platforms to meet housing requirements if needed.
- Make basic survival items: a Work Bench,
Furnace, Anvil, Campfire, and Torches. Place a Bed when possible to reset your spawn near your base.
- Craft a few early healing items and buffs:
- Gather Mushrooms and make Regeneration Potions (excellent early survivability).
- Collect Bottled Honey as a stopgap healing item when Lesser Healing Potions are scarce.
- Equip cheap armor (Wood,
Ebonwood/
Shadewood, or mixed metal pieces). Armor mainly boosts defense early and will be replaced quickly.
Movement and exploration tools
- Obtain and equip mobility accessories as soon as possible:
Aglet,
Anklet of the Wind, and craft Lightning Boots later by combining with Spectre Boots at a Tinkerer's Workshop. Mobility makes boss fights and exploration much safer.
- Make platforms, rope, and minecart tracks to cover horizontal distances and access caves faster.
- Dig hellevators or safe vertical shafts to speed travel between surface and caverns. These are also invaluable later for scouting Hardmode ore spread or using the Clentaminator/terraforming techniques.
Early resource farms and passive income
Mushroom farms (multi-layer dirt platforms with gaps) reliably produce Regular Mushrooms (for Regeneration Potions) and Vile/Vicious Mushrooms (for boss summoning items or crafting powders). Use fences/background walls and platforms to control spawns.
- Gem tree farms (if you find gemcorns) scale well: require vertical spacing and replanted gemcorns to produce sellable gems over time.
- Critter farming with a Bug Net and Cooking Pot can be a consistent early money source; selling cooked critters gives more profit.
- Enemy farming (simple arenas or traps) yields coins and drops. Use Treasure Magnet and optimize spawn/kill rate for best returns.
Early exploration targets
- Surface and Underground (cavern layer) exploration:
- Search for large surface caves (Mountain Caves) for pots, chests, and Life Crystals.
- Use minecart tracks and natural cave systems to reach the Underground and Cavern layers for more loot and herbs.
- The Jungle and Underground Desert are high-value but can be dangerous early—prepare accordingly.
- Locate and clear the Dungeon only after you can handle its enemies;
Skeletron must be defeated to safely explore it.
Preparing for early bosses
- Pre-Skeletron: focus on acquiring better weapons, mobility, and defensive items. Skeletron unlocks the Dungeon loot (Necro armor, Shadow Chests).
- Pre-
Wall of Flesh: collect healing, summon or craft boss-specific items, and ensure you can reach and move in the Underworld.
- Build simple arenas: a flat platformed runway with a roof and space for movement, plus campfires and heart lanterns, is enough for many early bosses.
- For jumpy or projectile-heavy fights, add a roof to block flying enemies and create controlled firing holes.
Containing and managing biomes (pre-Hardmode)
- Prevent spread of Corruption/Crimson on the surface using Sunflowers and simple 3–6 tile-high tunnels (quarantines) to block grass spread locally.
- When digging tunnels to protect areas, place non-corruptible blocks (Wood,
Hay, Dungeon Bricks) over exposed grass/edges near the tunnels to prevent thorn growth and vine spread.
- It’s acceptable to ignore full purification until later; contain and preserve areas of Evil/Hallow you may need.
Early crafting layout and bench reach
- Set up a multi-crafting station so most essential crafting stations and storage are within interaction range. Placement and reach efficiency save time when switching recipes frequently.
- Place bottles (placed bottle, keg, cauldron) and a water source in your crafting area to craft potions easily.
Early events and farming strategies
- Goblin Army can spawn once you have 200 HP and have broken a Shadow Orb/Crimson Heart. Prepare a safe battlefield or box shelter with holes to shoot through; many Pirate and invasion enemies use projectiles so enclosed arenas are safer.
- Use simple traps like Boulder Traps wired to timers or mob-slowing layouts to farm event spawns and increase coin/item gains.
- Events and moons (
Pumpkin Moon,
Frost Moon) spawn many enemies and are very lucrative later; in earlygame focus on the Goblin Army or accessible invasion tiers.
Key preparations for Hardmode transition
- Before summoning or killing the Wall of Flesh:
- Improve mobility (boots, grappling hook), stockpile potions (Regeneration, Ironskin, Endurance when herbs available), and ensure you have a Pwnhammer to break altars.
- Prepare to protect important bases and pylons from early Hardmode spread; the Hallow and Corruption/Crimson will spawn in diagonal strips and spread underground after Wall of Flesh is defeated.
- Early Hardmode priorities:
- Smash altars to spawn Hardmode ores (first three altar breaks generate the first two tiers of ores in sequence). Aim to make pickaxes/drills and a Hardmode Anvil quickly to craft mechanical boss-summoning items.
- Quarantine or prepare chokepoints around the Jungle and base if you plan to limit Evil/Hallow spread. Chlorophyte will later grow and help contain spread naturally.
- Consider AFK underground farms before Hardmode so you can obtain potent weapons and money early in Hardmode.
Class and equipment guidance (early choices)
- Melee: use classless armor and focus on melee speed and mobility early; mixed metal armor is sufficient until dedicated sets are available.
- Ranged: secure arrows or craft ammunition; ranged benefits from Spectre Boots/boots upgrades and good movement options.
- Magic: collect early mana and a few spellbooks/wands; Spectre armor pieces and mana items become valuable later.
- Summoner: early summoner progression can be weak until specific staves are found; a single minion slot from some chestpieces is highly valuable.
- Don’t over-invest in early armor—most early sets will be replaced soon. Buying or crafting cheap, configurable accessories (Grappling Hook, Boots upgrades) yields greater early benefit.
Short checklist for a smooth earlygame
- Build basic base with a bed, crafting area, and one or two house(s) for initial NPCs.
- Farm mushrooms and set up a small herb garden or Mushroom farm for potion supply.
- Make mobility items (boots, grappling hook) and a hellevator for fast travel.
- Gather Life Crystals to reach 200 HP, then prepare for the Goblin Army trigger and Skeletron.
- When ready to enter Hardmode: secure potions, make a plan to smash altars safely, and have an ore-to-tools path planned (first pickaxe/drill and Hardmode Anvil).
Following these steps will make the early hours reliable and set you up to enter Hardmode with the equipment, mobility, and infrastructure necessary to progress through the midgame.
