Mid Game Guide: Hardmode Progression, Mechanical Bosses, Plantera
Mid game is the phase after beating the initial Hardmode progression and the Mechanical Bosses, where Chlorophyte mining opens, class specialization becomes important, and you prepare for Plantera,

Goals and priorities
- Unlock Chlorophyte mining by defeating the three Mechanical Bosses and crafting the Drax or Pickaxe Axe so you can farm Chlorophyte Ore in the Jungle.
- Choose a class specialization (melee, ranged, magic, summoner) and begin collecting class-specific armor and accessories; reforging accessories matters more now.
- Build multi-use crafting and farming areas so you can craft advanced armors, tools, and boss-summoning items efficiently.
- Prepare safe, repeatable arenas for Plantera, Golem, and post-
Plantera bosses and events (
Pumpkin Moon, Pumpkin Seeds, etc.).
- Optionally use world-rework tools like the Clentaminator to shape biomes for farming or to create Chlorophyte-friendly Jungle.
Progression and gear
- After the Mechanical Bosses you should be able to craft Hallowed equipment and then access Chlorophyte. Use your Souls and Hallowed Bars to make the best interim gear while farming Chlorophyte.
- Chlorophyte weapons, tools, and armor are a significant upgrade. Chlorophyte armor includes a Leaf Crystal that automatically attacks and focuses on current opponents while sharing targeting across enemies; its upgrades lead into specialized intermediate tier armors:
- Melee:
Turtle & Beetle armors.
- Ranged: Shroomite armor.
- Magic: Spectre armor (with Hood offering healing options).
- Melee:
- Craft the Chlorophyte pickaxe (
Drax or Pickaxe Axe) to harvest Chlorophyte deposits growing in Jungle mud; Chlorophyte spawns and spreads in Jungle areas over time, so plan a farm or clear area to mine efficiently.
Class choices and recommendations
- Ranger (ranged) generally has the strongest weapons in mid game and is a solid default choice.
- Melee benefits from high-defense melee armors and becomes very tanky; consider melee if you prefer close combat and survivability.
- Magic focuses on crowd control; it is useful for early encounters with multi-segmented bosses and The Destroyer.
- Summoner is viable but some key summoner weapons (e.g.,
Dreadnautilus,
Queen Slime drops) may be harder to obtain; summoner players often temporarily switch loadouts to defeat certain bosses, then return to summoner gear.
- Hybrid or mixed builds combining summoner with another offensive class are effective—accessory choices and extra minion slots change recommended armors.
- Accessory choice: mid game is when reforging for favorable modifiers and deciding on an offensive vs. defensive accessory setup becomes meaningful. Items such as Flesh Knuckles and Star Veil open new defensive avenues while damage accessories improve DPS.
Boss arenas and fight setup
- Mechanical boss fights can be staged on either the surface or an underworld starting island:
- Starting islands have normal gravity and fewer environmental hazards but limited height may restrict Gravitation Potion usage.
- Surface arenas give more room but more hostile spawns and lower gravity—use enclosed frames of solid blocks to keep most enemies out and place lava floors to prevent enemy spawns. Use Obsidian Skin Potion when standing in lava.
- Ensure a ceiling to prevent falling stars and NPC/projectile hazards.
- For Plantera and Golem:
- Clear and light the Underground Jungle to make Plantera bulbs easier to find and to farm Chlorophyte.
- The Jungle Temple may generate on the surface; when exploring it expect Wraiths and other hazards if it's accessible above ground. Lihzahrd Bricks do not necessarily count as Jungle biome; Golem will remain non-enraged while you are in front of temple walls.
- Use tools that let you probe trap layouts (
Mechanical Lens,
The Grand Design) to locate and navigate Temple traps safely.
Crafting and base layout
- Establish multi-crafting areas so you can quickly access workbenches, furnaces, anvils, cooking stations, alchemy stations, and storage without moving far:
- Early and mid-game multi-crafting areas should place crafting stations within the player's reach while standing on a single platform—this saves time when crafting complex boss or armor sets.
- Upgrades like Extendo Grip and consumables that increase crafting reach expand workable layout options; design your station to include placed bottles or cauldrons as needed for potion crafting.
- Keep storage for Chlorophyte, Souls, Boss drops, and crafting ingredients organized and within reach of your crafting area.
Farming and world management
- Chlorophyte farming: Chlorophyte grows in Mud in the Underground Jungle and spreads slowly; set up controlled Chlorophyte farms by planting a Chlorophyte Ore tile in mud and protecting it from being mined until mature.
- Plantera bulbs can spawn anywhere in the Underground Jungle; preserve jungle areas or reset bulb spawns by creating jungle biomes in multiple locations or keeping world backups/seeds for restarts.
- Events:
- Pumpkin Moon is harder to reliably summon if Pumpkin Seeds cannot grow on Jungle grass—plan seed farms in non-jungle surface biomes.
- Use the Clentaminator with Blue Solution then Green Solution to convert large surface areas to Forest if you need space or biome control for farming or event arenas.
Transitioning toward late-game
- After obtaining Chlorophyte and its armor/tool options, pursue the next bosses in sequence: Plantera → Golem →
Lunatic Cultist → Moon Lord. Each step grants materials that shift available armors and accessories toward specialized endgame sets (Turtle/Beetle, Shroomite, Spectre, and later endgame sets).
- Summoner late-game choices (Stardust Dragon / Stardust Cell Staffs, Terraprisma) become available later; begin collecting components and optimizing accessory setups (extra minion slots,
Constellation) as you approach the Pre-Moon Lord stage.
Practical tips
- If a boss or arena proves difficult, switch to a different class/loadout temporarily to clear progression bottlenecks, then return to your chosen specialization.
- Use dynamite or later launchers to quickly clear rooms or smooth arena floors/ceilings; smooth surfaces improve maneuverability.
- Keep multiple arenas prepared (underground island, enclosed surface arena, jungle fight pit) so you can choose the safest or most convenient location for the current fight.
- Reforge accessories frequently at this stage to maximize the benefit from the improved accessory pool.
This phase is about consolidating power: use Chlorophyte, class specialization, improved accessory rolls, and efficient crafting/farming layouts to push through Plantera and Golem and prepare for the final endgame bosses.
