Plantera is a Hardmode boss that spawns in the Underground Jungle when one of her Plantera's Bulbs is broken after the three Mechanical Bosses have been defeated. She is a large, stationary-rooted plant that moves by using three long vine-like appendages (Plantera's Hooks) to grapple onto solid foreground blocks; in her second phase she also gains the ability to latch onto background walls. The Hooks are invincible and deal contact damage, allowing Plantera to pull herself through blocks and climb surfaces that look like normal background. Visually, Plantera resembles an overgrown flower with closed petals in her first phase, and her second phase adds visible spores and enraged animations. According to developer Cenx, Plantera is female.
Plantera's behavior makes terrain and arena design a major factor in the fight. She travels slowly but can move through blocks by latching; if she has no surfaces to latch onto she will slowly float upward until she finds a place to grip. Because her Hooks pass through blocks, attempts to completely trap her inside solid terrain will fail — she will simply latch out. If summoned and another Bulb is broken while she is active, no second Plantera will spawn (the bulb is destroyed but the boss does not duplicate).
Plantera has two distinct phases. The first phase focuses on contact and Hook-based movement. In the second phase she gains background grappling and releases spores as a ranged attack; these Spores are easy to kill, so maintaining distance and dealing with the spores individually reduces incoming damage. Plantera's battle music is heavy metal–themed and was the first boss to have an exclusive track named after her.
Plantera drops a large variety of items, among the largest trophy chests of any boss. She can drop exclusive musical instrument loot (The Axe) and other themed items, and has unique pet-summoning items (Seedling and Plantera Seedling, including the Mud Bud if applicable). If the world lacks Jungle Temple building tiles or unsafe Lihzahrd Brick Walls at the time the world performs its generation check (which occurs on world entry or occasionally during gameplay), Plantera will drop Jungle Temple building materials upon defeat and reset that drop condition; removing an entire Jungle Temple and then defeating Plantera can thus grant Lihzahrd-related materials without switching worlds. Plantera was the first boss with an exclusive music track and has one of the largest total numbers of possible drops.
Practical notes and strategies:
Prepare a roomy arena by excavating space in the Underground Jungle; Scarab Bombs speed excavation. Widening an existing Bee Hive is a fast method but be cautious of Larva spawns.
Remove background walls from the arena when possible. Plantera's mobility in phase two relies on walls to hook onto; arenas without background walls significantly limit her movement. Living Fire Blocks can light an arena while remaining unclimbable by Plantera.
Use a Hellevator to fight her higher in the Jungle and combine with wings to glide while attacking with ranged or magic weapons. Gravitation Potions help by letting the player avoid Thorn Balls that obey gravity and fall to the floor. Alternatively, design the arena so Thorn Balls bounce well below the player.
Teleporters and a clear vertical space improve escape options against her Hooks and roaming behavior. Narrow passages slow Plantera since it takes longer for her to grip surrounding terrain, which can be used tactically.
Plantera's spores in phase two are her only ranged threat and are simple to destroy; focus on spacing and killing spores to minimize damage.
Plantera's Bulbs can spawn in player-made Jungle biomes, providing a controllable and often easier way to initiate the fight.
Plantera's defeat grants significant progression rewards and alters the Underground Jungle's threat level by unlocking various post-Plantera gear and crafting components. She has several unique drops and achievements tied to her name and musical references, and remains one of the most thematically distinct bosses in the game.
