Skeletron Prime

Overview
Skeletron Prime is a Hardmode mechanical boss encountered in the Dungeon. It is a mechanized, multi-limbed variant of

Skeletron Prime's head attempts to hover between approximately 12.5 and 31.5 tiles above the player and stay within about 6.25 tiles horizontally of the player. It will accelerate without limit to return to that preferred position and typically remains above the player rather than directly charging. The four limbs exhibit distinct behaviors: Prime Saw generally stays beneath the player and oscillates vertically; Prime Vice swings wildly and makes frequent lunges, often remaining at a diagonal; Prime Cannon fires explosive bombs that detonate on contact with platforms and planter boxes; Prime Laser aims directly at a player and fires red Death Lasers roughly every 3.33 seconds while usually staying horizontal.
Every 10 seconds Skeletron Prime enters a spinning phase that lasts 6.67 seconds. During this phase the head sprouts spikes and spins toward the player in the same manner as pre-Hardmode Skeletron; the head’s damage and defense are doubled while spinning. Limbs become more aggressive in the spinning phase: Prime Cannon aims directly and reduces its firing cooldown, Prime Saw homes on the player, Prime Vice lunges more frequently, and Prime Laser increases its firing rate (lasers fire every 1.33 seconds during the spin). A distinctive sound plays each time Skeletron Prime begins the spinning phase. If the player is more than 375 tiles away, Skeletron Prime will descend and rapidly despawn.
Practical notes for the battle:
- Mobility is essential, especially during the spinning phase when the head deals doubled damage. Wings for vertical movement and a sky bridge or flattened terrain for horizontal maneuvering help avoid heavy contact.
- Prioritizing arms is effective: destroying the most disruptive limb first or focusing on Prime Laser early reduces incoming unavoidable damage and makes the head accessible sooner.
- Prime Laser is often the most dangerous limb to leave alive because its aimed Death Lasers are harder to dodge than other attacks.
- Because Skeletron Prime has high defense, applying defensive-penetration debuffs such as Ichor (which the head does not resist) increases effective damage, though Ichor weapons sometimes deal lower raw damage and should be used tactically.
- Bombs from the Prime Cannon explode on impact with platforms and planter boxes, which can be used against the player or intercepted with terrain.
- If Skeletron Prime survives until dawn it becomes enraged: its velocity, damage, and defense increase substantially and it will usually kill the player on contact until defeated; killing it in this state still counts as a valid defeat and it drops items normally.
Cosmetic and mechanical curiosities: the head and arms continuously animate (the head opens and shuts except during spinning), joints emit fire and smoke particles, and the head’s sprite and map icon spin during the spinning phase. Skeletron Prime is unique among mechanical bosses for bearing the pre-Hardmode boss’s name and for having more than two arms.
