Overview

The Destroyer is a Hardmode mechanical boss that functions as a segmented worm enemy and one of the three Mechanical Bosses encountered after entering Hardmode. It spawns coiled and immediately uncoils to pursue the player, following from any distance and only despawning if the player dies or dawn arrives. While it has limited mobility when fully visible in the air (it requires blocks or platforms to "burrow" through), The Destroyer can move freely while off-screen and will travel underground rapidly to despawn if necessary.

The Destroyer attacks by ramming and attempting to surround the player with its many segments, by firing red Death Lasers from its segments, and by releasing autonomous flying Probes from damaged segments. Each body segment has a chance to release a Probe the first time it is damaged; this event is indicated by the red light on the segment turning off. Probes fly toward the player, keep distance while occasionally strafing into melee range, and fire Pink Lasers with moderate accuracy. Probes never reattach, will despawn if the player is too far or dies, and do not automatically despawn when the boss itself is killed. In Expert Mode, both The Destroyer and its Probes take only 75% damage from the Golden Shower.

The Destroyer is exceptionally long and durable: it measures 82 segments (239 tiles) including head and tail in normal worlds, and in For the Worthy worlds increases to 102 segments with larger segments. Its head deals very high contact damage in Expert and Master Modes, ranking among the highest of boss attacks. The Destroyer’s body is studded with small metal devices that resemble wheel- or leg-like protrusions.

Because it behaves like other worm-type bosses but generates persistent independent Probes, effective strategies emphasize area- or multi-target damage and mobility:

  • Use weapons that hit multiple segments or multiple enemies to damage many parts of the worm and its Probes at once; lining up with the head and firing along the body yields high reward but increases risk since the head has no defense.
  • Prioritize destroying Probes quickly; they interfere with movement and provide a steady source of Heart pickups if allowed to linger.
  • Teleportation (Magic Mirrors, Teleporters, etc.) is safe to use because The Destroyer follows the player rather than despawning; be aware it can traverse while off-screen.
  • Mobility aids such as Gravitation Potions help avoid contact by hovering above the worm’s path and reduce the chance of being surrounded by segments.
  • The Destroyer is immune to debuffs, so avoid relying on debuff-dependent weapons or flasks for damage or control.
  • Use the minimap to anticipate surfacing locations for better dodging of rams and lasers.

Because of its size, damage pattern, and Probe behavior, fights against The Destroyer reward arena preparation that allows freedom of movement and weapons capable of damaging multiple segments or flying targets simultaneously.
