Empress of Light

Overview
The Empress of Light is an optional post-Golem Hardmode boss themed around the Hallow. She is summoned by killing a Prismatic Lacewing while it is in the Hallow; the critter drops the Empress's summoning trigger when slain. Although classed as a Hardmode boss, she can be summoned in pre-Hardmode worlds. The encounter is a pure single-entity fight (no segments or persistent minions) that plays like an intense bullet-hell barrage, with a distinct enraged daytime moveset that makes her exceptionally lethal.
The Empress has two primary behavior sets: a normal (night) set and an enraged (day) set. If she is damaged during daytime while enraged, she remains enraged until nightfall; if she is not damaged during the day, she will despawn at or after the in-game time threshold for day. Because of this, players who wish to obtain the Terraprisma (her rare daytime-exclusive drop) must both summon and defeat her within the same day window. If summoned after the day threshold, she will immediately despawn; in Remix and
Her attacks consistently bypass standard invincibility frames, so all damage from her projectiles ignores typical damage-reduction windows. Ethereal Lance is unique among her moves because its lances spawn near the player rather than traveling from the boss; it is the only attack that can hit regardless of distance. When switching between normal and enraged attack sequences in phase two, she can repeat a move or jump to a different point in the alternate sequence due to a variant Ethereal Lance included in the enraged set. In Master Mode the enraged projectiles deal the single highest projectile damage value found in the game.
Practical notes for summoning and preparation:
- Capture Prismatic Lacewings with a Bug Net rather than killing them immediately. A captured Lacewing lets you choose the timing and location of the fight. The Guide to Critter Companionship prevents critter damage and can be used to avoid accidentally summoning the Empress. If you release a captured Lacewing outside the Hallow it will vanish quickly; do not rely on long exposure to non-Hallow terrain.
- If you need to ensure a Prismatic Lacewing dies (for example to trigger a daytime fight), place it into a fixed area-of-effect projectile such as a Clinger Staff flame pillar or the Rainbow Gun’s rainbow so it cannot escape.
- Mobility and damage output are prioritized over defense during daytime fights for the Terraprisma. Any hit from the enraged Empress can be instantly lethal, so maximizing DPS and evasiveness is the correct tradeoff. Replace defensive accessories like Holy Protection or Black Belt-style items with damage or mobility items for the daytime run.
- Use wings or flight aids with strong hover or acceleration (Fishron/Betsy Wings,
Jetpack) and dash abilities (Shield of Cthulhu, Master Ninja Gear, Solar Flare armor) to maintain repositioning capability. Flying mounts can be used to free accessory slots for damage, but they are higher risk.
- Rod of Discord is extremely valuable for evasion; during the daytime Terraprisma attempt, ignore the Chaos State damage since a small self-hit is preferable to immediate death. The Shield/Dash/Teleport toolkit greatly improves survival chances at night and allows for more consistent DPS windows.
- Build a large mobility-focused arena from Asphalt Blocks and platforms to maximize movement speed and options. Do not bother with regeneration or defense-boosting structures (Campfires, Heart Lanterns, Bast Statues) in daytime runs because any damage will be fatal.
- Favor long-range, homing, or reliably accurate weapons (for example Blizzard Staff, Possessed Hatchet, Scourge of the
Corruptor,
Tsunami, Aerial Bane, Snowman Cannon, Chain Gun, or Tactical Shotgun with Chlorophyte Bullets) to chip away quickly and avoid contact. Applying practical debuffs such as
Ichor, Betsy’s Curse or Daybroken can increase damage; the Empress is not immune to common debuffs.
- Stay at or slightly below the Empress’s vertical level during fights. She frequently zips above the player’s position after attacks, and remaining around her height reduces the chance of accidental contact damage or unnecessary hits.
- Be aware that difficulty changes in Journey Mode after she is summoned can cause abnormal scaling of her contact and dash damage. Spawning her at a higher difficulty then lowering it (or vice versa) will produce nonstandard contact/dash values.
Lore and design details relevant to the encounter include internal naming and audiovisual notes: her internal NPC name is HallowBoss and her spawn light effect is internally DeathAurora. Her gore shows blue blood, consistent with other noble-themed or Hallow-adjacent bosses. The Empress was described by developers as a “beautiful bullet hell” and draws inspiration from fast-paced shoot ’em up titles.
