Overview

The Fermenter is the first food-processing building available to beavers. It is available at the start of a colony, requires only Logs to construct (plus the listed additional materials for some supply chains), and must be powered to operate. The Fermenter converts raw crops and intermediate ingredients into preserved, higher-value foods such as Fermented Cassava, Fermented Soybean, and Fermented Mushroom. It occupies a central role in early to mid-game food production by enabling longer-lasting foodstuffs and more efficient use of crop yields.

Fermenters take input items from supply chains that begin at Farmhouses or Hydroponic Gardens and output the corresponding fermented product while consuming power. The typical production flows are:

Practical notes and interactions:

  • The Fermenter requires a power connection to function; plan power lines and accumulators so fermentation runs continuously as needed.
  • Early in the game, Fermented Cassava is the simplest and cheapest fermented food because it only relies on Farmhouses and Logs for the Fermenter itself.
  • Adding recipes that use processed inputs (like Canola Oil) increases complexity and requires additional buildings (Oil Press) and components (Planks, Gears). Build those only when the colony’s materials and logistics can support the extra demand.
  • Fermented Mushroom production is attractive where Hydroponic Gardens are available and water/metal supply is secure, but factor in the high ratio of Hydroponic Gardens required per Fermenter.
  • Position Fermenters near storage and haul routes to minimize delivery delays; fermentation is limited by steady input flow as well as power availability.
