Scholar

Overview
Scholar is a Nightreign character who travels in search of the Lands Between to expand his knowledge. He is a member of the Arrotas Research Hall and improves his learning through expeditions. Scholar suffers from a wasting illness that accelerates his physical aging, leaving his sensory perception and battlefield awareness as his most prominent attributes while some other raw physical stats lag behind.
Scholar excels at a precise, technical playstyle built around crowd control, debuffs, and team utility. He favors thrusting swords that emphasize pokes, counters, and spacing over heavy strikes; these weapons synergize with his high Arcane and status-focused toolkit. His movement incorporates refined sidesteps, backstep feints, and flowing motion chains that let him control distance while maintaining pressure. When not controlled by the player, Scholar can be found at the Roundtable Hold.
Scholar’s defining mechanics center on observation and item utility. His Character Skill, Analyze, marks targets inside a large circle and builds a red gauge on focused targets; the longer the gauge fills, the stronger the applied buff or debuff. Analysis speed scales with distance — close targets fill quickly while distant targets take longer — and Scholar lowers his weapon while analyzing, leaving him vulnerable during the process. Analyze can buff allies and himself (examples: Level 1 buff increases Stamina; Level 3 buff conjures a shield that releases a shockwave when hit) and debuff enemies (examples: Level 1 debuff reduces attack; Level 3 debuff makes the target take extra damage on the next hit). The skill is most effective when multiple targets (enemies and allies) are within the circle.
Scholar’s Ultimate Art, Communion, links nearby foes and allies so that damage dealt to one linked enemy is mirrored across all linked enemies, and healing applied to one linked ally is shared among connected allies. Scholar is invulnerable while casting Communion. The ultimate is especially potent against clustered enemy groups and multi-target encounters and provides significant team survivability when used on allies.
Scholar has a passive, Bagcraft, that improves item handling for consumable Tools. Bagcraft increases the stack limit for consumable Tools and allows Tools to be leveled up twice during an Expedition by repeatedly using items in that category; upgrades apply to the entire category (for example, repeatedly using a Throwing Pot strengthens all Throwing Pots). The upgrades improve effectiveness at level 2 and add a secondary effect at level 3.
Starting equipment for Scholar includes a thrusting sword whose visual form changes with equipped cosmetics but does not alter its damage. Scholar’s gameplay benefits from weapon effects that reduce the chance of being targeted, which synergizes with Analyze. His Albinauric heritage gives him an S rank in Arcane.
Relic and chalice options further tune Scholar toward team support and Art generation. Preferred relic effects include: allies targeted by Character Skill gain boosted attack; items confer effects to nearby allies; effects that fill the Art gauge faster on defeating enemies; continuous damage applied to targets threaded by the Ultimate Art; flask effects that also heal allies; and reduced Character Skill cooldown. Recommended Relics to prioritize include effects that stack Art gauge on kills and ones that make items or flasks affect nearby allies. Scholar’s chalices include the Scholar’s Urn (default), purchasable Scholar’s Goblet and Scholar’s Chalice, and several purchasable or reward Grails and special urns unlocked through Nightlord or Remembrance content.
Practical play notes:
- Use Analyze from secure positions or after crowd-control has isolated enemies; the longer you observe a target the stronger the effect.
- Pair Arcane-scaling thrusting swords or status-inflicting weapons (e.g., those that apply Scarlet Rot) with Analyze to spread status efficiently across multiple enemies.
- Cast Communion when enemies are clustered or to amplify team healing; be mindful that Scholar is invulnerable while casting but allies are not.
- Rely on Bagcraft to make consumables more potent over an Expedition — frequently using a category (throwables, potions, etc.) grants global upgrades to that category.
- Equip Relics that accelerate Art gauge gain on kills and that extend item/flask effects to allies for optimal team utility.
