Overview
Spectre is a 4x4 heavy turret that fires large bullets at both air and ground targets. It occupies the long-range, high-damage slot among Serpulo's large turrets and serves as an all-purpose defensive gun for bases that can afford its high build cost and ammo consumption.
Spectre does not consume power and instead relies on conventional solid ammo and optional liquid cooling for modest fire-rate bonuses.
Spectre's baseline characteristics favor single-target damage and range. It has a long range (increased to 32.5 tiles in later versions), high health, and a relatively high firing speed; its usable ammo types (Graphite,
Thorium,
Pyratite) each change its role subtly.
Graphite rounds increase rate of fire and use a 4x ammo multiplier for very high single-target DPS.
Thorium rounds are the simplest to supply (drillable), deal strong knockback and pierce enemy lines, and are effective at thinning waves.
Pyratite rounds add area damage over roughly 3.1 tiles, apply burning, and deliver the highest potential DPS against clustered enemies, though pyratite is more expensive and hazardous to store.
Practical notes and strategies:
Graphite ammo provides the highest sustained single-target DPS thanks to a +70% fire rate modifier and a 4x multiplier, making it excellent against high-HP single targets; however, it lacks piercing and can be overwhelmed by swarms.
Thorium ammo trades slightly lower DPS for piercing and strong knockback, making it the easiest to supply and reliable against advancing lines of units.
Pyratite ammo deals 20 area damage in a ~3.1 tile radius and applies burning for several seconds; it excels at dealing with clumped enemies and pairs well with oil-based attacks, but it is slower and more dangerous to store.
Spectre consumes large amounts of ammo rapidly; sustained operation requires either fast production lines, dedicated ammo storage, or frequent resupply.
Overdrive Projectors or
Overdrive Domes are generally preferable to liquid cooling for boosting fire rate because
Spectre's coolant consumption yields only modest bonuses; if using liquids for cooling, feed them through adjacent liquid tanks.
Spectre is vulnerable to long-range direct counters. Fortresses can outrange and snipe Spectres when placed appropriately.
Corvus and other long-range or piercing units can also eliminate Spectres from safe distances.
Quad bombing or concentrated bombardment can remove enemy Spectres if they are protected by a beard of defenses.- On higher threat sectors Spectres may appear in enemy bases supplied with thorium or homemade ammo; they present a severe threat to units in the open because of range and damage.
History and notable mechanics:
Spectre has undergone balance changes over versions including increases to range and health, adjustments to build cost and build time, and significant tuning of ammo damage, multipliers, and coolant interactions. It is one of the original large 4x4 turrets on Serpulo and, like other 4x4 turrets, is named after a processor security vulnerability (Spectre).
