Overview

Malign is a high-powered long-range turret in Mindustry introduced in Build 136 and categorized among late-game Erekir defenses. It is a 5x5 wind-up turret that fires a complex flak-style projectile: a primary homing power shot that spawns a lightning/shock effect and nine laser frag beams on detonation. The primary shot deals 70 damage (reduced by 70% vs. buildings to 21), uses a FlakBulletType with homing behavior (0.17 power homing, 19-frame delay after firing, 20-tile homing range), and triggers a single lightning strike of around 20 damage that applies Shocked. The frag component consists of nine LaserBulletType beams dealing 65 damage each (reduced by 75% vs. buildings to 16.25), with 22.5 tile length and 2x pierce; the frag has no angular spread on spawn. These combined effects give Malign exceptional single-target and area-interruption capability, especially against high-health units at range.

Construction and stats were rebalanced in Build 147: build costs and time were reduced (graphite and silicon from 800→500, phase fabric from 300→200, beryllium 2000→1000, carbide 400→200; build time 79.83→44s), while power use was adjusted (power use stated at 2400 units/sec in the same patch notes) and firing behavior changed—heat input was lowered (90→72), firing rate increased (6.66→8.57/sec), and range increased slightly (46.25→47.5). The turret now has a minimum time (2 seconds) before its wind-up resets, prioritizes enemies by highest maximum health, and will pre-wind when spotting an enemy at about 71.75 tiles.

Malign is heat-hungry compared with other endgame weapons: achieving a 200% heating multiplier requires significant heat infrastructure (for example, dozens of Electric Heaters or multiple Neoplasia Reactors). It consumes much more heat than comparable weapons (notably more than Afflict) and therefore demands careful resource planning and factory layout to sustain continuous firing.

Practical usage and interactions:

  • Malign excels at dealing with single large threats and high-health targets due to its homing primary and piercing laser frags; it performs especially well when defending against powerful slow units or bosses.
  • The wind-up mechanic requires placement where the turret can pre-wind safely. Malign will wind in advance when it detects targets within long range, but a player or base layout should avoid situations where wind-up is interrupted by movement or damage.
  • High heat requirements make it better suited to static, well-supported defensive lines rather than early-field forward bases. Plan for extensive heating (Electric Heaters, Slag/Phase Heaters, or reactors) to reach optimal output.
  • Malign is vulnerable to mass swarms of fast, low-health units (e.g., Quell) because many small targets can overwhelm its firing pattern; complement it with cheaper rapid-firing turrets or area-effect defenses.
  • When player-controlled, Malign’s wind-up and frag range can be exploited to hit distant or otherwise hard-to-reach targets (including some turret types) that automated targeting might not handle as effectively.
  • Malign shares firing sound and a visible firing halo with certain other Erekir turrets (Tecta, Smite, Titan, Scathe). It is one of the few turrets on Erekir that has a wind-up period before firing and is one of only two 5x5 turrets on the planet alongside Smite.
