Overview

Unempathetic is a duplicant trait that describes a poor bedside manner and a lack of empathy when dealing with injured or sick colony members. Duplicants with this trait struggle to provide effective care, making it difficult for them to nurse peers back to health. The trait broadly represents an interpersonal shortcoming that affects medical and caregiving interactions rather than a physical incapacity.

Duplicants who are Unempathetic will perform caregiving and medical assistance with noticeably reduced finesse. They are less suited to roles that require comforting, tending, or steadying other duplicants during recovery. In practical play, this manifests as an increased likelihood that their attempts to help will be less effective, and they generally make suboptimal choices when assigned to tend the wounded or sick. The trait does not imply the duplicant cannot perform medical tasks at all, but it does mean they are a poorer long-term choice for roles centered around patient care.

  • Do not assign Unempathetic duplicants as primary caregivers or to staff the medbay if better alternatives exist. Prioritize duplicants with caring or medical-oriented traits for medical cots, infirmaries, and rescue duties.
  • Use Unempathetic duplicants in roles that minimize close emotional interaction with injured peers, such as maintenance, construction, farming, research, or resource hauling. They remain fully capable of most non-care tasks.
  • When an Unempathetic duplicant must perform caregiving—during staff shortages or emergencies—keep other supportive systems in place: ensure access to proper medical equipment, triage patients so the most skilled caregivers handle critical cases, and reduce stressors that can complicate recovery.
  • Pair Unempathetic duplicants with teammates who have high morale or positive social traits to offset their reduced bedside manner. Strong social bonds and a supportive environment reduce the impact of poor caregiving on overall colony health.
  • Consider colony layout and scheduling to minimize situations where an Unempathetic duplicant is the only available helper. Centralize medical facilities and maintain redundancy in caregiver assignments so that more empathetic duplicants can respond when needed.

Unempathetic is a behavioral limitation rather than an immediate danger; with thoughtful task assignment and support systems, colonies can accommodate these duplicants without compromising long-term survivability.
