Reroll Guide: Best Starters & Tier List for New Game

Reroll controls how you refresh candidate Duplicants at the start of a new colony and what choices are (or are not) available when the Printing Pod offers new arrivals during a run.

What "reroll" means

Rerolling is the act of replacing a presented Duplicant candidate with a new randomly generated candidate. In Oxygen Not Included this applies only to the pre-game Duplicant selection screen: you may reroll starting Duplicants any number of times before the run begins. There is no reroll option for Duplicants offered by the Printing Pod during a running colony.

Rerolling at New Game (Starting Duplicants)

  • During the final step of Game Settings, you are presented with three starting Duplicant candidates.
  • You may reroll any individual starting candidate as many times as you like until you accept them.
  • You may rename candidates.
  • You may choose one interest for a candidate to guarantee that interest will appear when that candidate is rerolled.
  • Once you finish the selection step and accept the three Duplicants, the actual game begins and further rerolls of those starting slots are no longer available.

Printing Pod arrivals (in-run)

  • The Printing Pod becomes available after its cooldown completes. The pod's cooldown timer begins a new cooldown only after you accept or explicitly reject a offered Duplicant or Care Package.
  • When the Printing Pod menu appears, you are offered either a new Duplicant or a Care Package.
  • Duplicants offered by the Printing Pod during a playthrough cannot be rerolled. If none of the presented options are acceptable, you may reject all options; rejecting or accepting will trigger the pod's cooldown to begin.
  • Exiting the Printing Pod dialogue without rejecting or accepting does not count as a rejection — the offer remains available and you can re-open the dialog later without starting the cooldown.

Practical tips

  • Use the unlimited rerolls on the New Game screen to craft a starting team with complementary skills, useful traits and at least one desired interest per duplicant if you want them to be reliably present.
  • Because Printing Pod arrivals cannot be rerolled, plan whether to accept new Duplicants or save the pod cooldown for when you need a particular skillset; rejecting all options gives you fresh offers only after the cooldown completes following the rejection.
  • Renaming on the New Game screen is free and can help keep track of planned roles before the run begins.

This covers all mechanics related to rerolling candidates for starting Duplicants and the absence of rerolls for in-game Printing Pod offers.
