Overview

The Printing Pod is an advanced 3D printer developed by the Gravitas Facility. It is the colony’s recurring source of new Duplicants and care packages, and it is one of the few machines in the game that operates on a fixed schedule: after a 3-cycle cooldown, it becomes ready and offers four choices to print. Typically, two or three of those choices are randomly generated Duplicants, while the remaining options are items, food, or resources.

Printed Duplicants have fixed appearances, traits, and interests when they are offered. If none of the available choices fit the colony, all of them can be rejected. Rejecting all options produces nothing, and the cooldown does not begin until a Duplicant or care package has been selected or rejected. Exiting the dialogue without making a choice does not consume the print options, so the menu can be reopened later.

The Printing Pod generates its own light and has a high decor value, which makes it an excellent early workstation for buildings that are used continuously, such as the Research Station, Manual Generator, Microbe Musher, Electric Grill, or Super Computer. Its light covers a small area around it and grants the usual work speed bonus to Duplicants working in lit tiles. It can also be disabled by Duplicants, which pauses the countdown to the next activation. Disabling it turns off the light as well, and it prevents nearby Duplicants from gaining skill from interacting with the pod or from idling nearby during downtime.

In practical play, the Printing Pod is often placed so that its light covers one or more high-use stations. A compact early-game layout can let several core buildings benefit from the light and decor at once. Because the pod is massive, it is durable, but it is still vulnerable to extreme heat and can be melted by magma. It is made of Iron Ore.

A few other points are worth noting:

  • Care packages may include liquids, critters, eggs, food, or raw resources.
  • All liquids arrive bottled.
  • All critters and eggs spawn in a wild state at 20 °C, so they may die quickly if the destination is inhospitable.
  • Some Duplicants, such as Ari, Mae, Ada, Meep, Liam, and Banhi, can only appear from the Printing Pod after the start of the game; Jorge is obtained only through the Mysterious Hermit story trait.
  • Saving and reloading while the pod is ready will reroll the available blueprints or care packages, which can be abused to search for a preferred Duplicant or reward.
  • The pod can be inspected once for a lore entry.

Because of its role in colony growth, the Printing Pod is one of the most important buildings in the game: it not only supplies population over time, but also serves as a convenient early-game utility hub for research, cooking, and other high-frequency tasks.
