Overview

Shrub is a decorative planting object placed by beavers to beautify settlements and slightly alter terrain visuals. It functions as a small, one-tile structure that occupies floor space and can be built directly on most ground surfaces, often fitting beneath larger constructions such as a Double Platform without preventing their placement. Shrubs are primarily aesthetic and do not provide resources, shelter, or direct utility like crops or trees, but they contribute to the visual variety of a colony and can be used to soften industrial areas or create garden-like spaces.

Shrubs were introduced at Early Access launch and have received minor updates since: in Version 1 the unlock requirement was changed from 20 to 0, making them available immediately, and in Update 4 they gained faction-specific appearances so different beaver factions can have distinct shrub styles. The building appears in the construction gallery as both a standalone decorative element and as part of dedicated planting layouts.

Practical notes for use:

  • Shrubs occupy a single tile and can be placed under Double Platforms and similar constructions; use them to add detail under elevated walkways without blocking placement.
  • They do not block workforce or movement by beavers beyond occupying the tile; plan paths and work areas accordingly.
  • Because they have no resource output, prioritize functional buildings for early-game planning and use shrubs for mid- to late-game beautification or thematic layouts.
  • Different factions may display unique shrub visuals after Update 4; mix shrub placement with other decorative elements to emphasize faction identity in a settlement.
