Overview

Spiral Stairs are a compact vertical-access building used to move beavers between levels in a small horizontal footprint. They appear as a 2x2 arrangement that lets settlers ascend or descend in a tight spiral, making them ideal for dense or tall constructions where conserving build area is important. Spiral Stairs are part of the stairs category and were present from the game's first version.

A common and efficient implementation is a 2x2 spiral staircase built from platforms. To construct this pattern, place two single Platforms at the bottom in opposite corners, then stack Double Platforms above them in the spiral pattern to the required height. This platform-based variant is both the fastest to construct and the most material-efficient for reaching high elevations.

An alternative is a 2x2 spiral using Overhang 2x1 pieces. This method produces the same spiral layout visually but requires more materials and takes longer to build than the platform technique. Use the overhang version when you prefer its appearance or need specific structural connections that platforms cannot provide.

Because the pure 2x2 spiral is continuous, inserting an intermediate exit requires altering the repeating pattern and adding overhangs or gaps so beavers can step off mid-way. Plan exits in advance if you need access at specific levels.

  • The spiral staircase design is highly space-efficient, making it preferable for towers, narrow shafts, and compact bases.
  • The platform-based spiral is the fastest build option and uses fewer resources than the overhang-based spiral.
  • Modifying the spiral to include mid-level exits demands breaking the regular pattern, which increases material cost and build time.
  • Visual references and examples include game artwork showing both platform and overhang 2x1 variants for layout guidance.
