Overview

Platforms are lightweight elevated walkways and floor tiles used to create multi-level structures, staircases, and usable space above water or terrain. They function as non-solid, permeable floors that do not block fluid flow, allowing placement and traversal over rivers, flooded areas, and other liquid tiles. Platforms come in single, double and triple heights and are commonly combined with Stairs to build spiral staircases, towers, and multi-story buildings while leaving the space below available for other small structures or decorations.

Platforms are distinct from Levees and solid floors because they can be built and used in water without impeding the movement of fluids. This makes them ideal for expanding usable area in watery maps and for constructing elevated walkways that span marshes or flooded basins. Platforms cannot be built above non-solid structures; to cross over such objects players must use Overhangs, Metal Platforms, or Suspension Bridges (bridges are suitable only for foot traffic).

Platforms are often stacked: Double Platforms and Triple Platforms increase the vertical clearance under the platform, permitting other constructions underneath. Typical uses include placing Stairs beneath a Double Platform or creating layered floors with room for decorations and small buildings below. Overhangs can be positioned inside the legs of Double and Triple Platforms, allowing compact multi-structure arrangements where overhang supports tuck into platform openings.

Practical notes and strategies:

  • Use single platforms for simple elevated paths; stack to Double/Triple Platforms when you need headroom beneath or want to route other structures under the walkway.
  • Combine Platforms with Stairs to form efficient spiral staircases for vertical movement in dense builds. The gallery example demonstrates a spiral staircase using platforms and stairs.
  • Place Platforms over water to expand buildable area without altering fluid dynamics; this is useful for placing workshops or storage access across flooded sections.
  • Platforms cannot be placed above non-solid objects; plan routes that require crossing obstacles with Overhangs, Metal Platforms, or Suspension Bridges instead.
  • Many small items and decorative pieces fit underneath platforms when vertical space allows, enabling compact multi-layer designs.
  • Historical note: Platforms were introduced in Closed Beta and became usable underwater at Early Access launch. Their resource costs have changed through updates (see update logs for version-specific costs).
