Overview

Tunnel is a landscaping structure in Timberborn that removes a single Terrain Block by construction. Placing and completing a tunnel site causes an immediate explosion that destroys the targeted Terrain Block and is not harmful to the builders who finish the construction. When a tunnel completes, the removed Terrain Block is instantaneously replaced by a platform to support any structures that were standing above the former block; this platform can be demolished afterwards. Tunnels were introduced in Update 7.

Tunnels can be sited on any Terrain Block, including sites placed at above-level positions. If a tunnel site is placed above a structure, that underlying structure becomes blocked from deletion while the tunnel is either in progress or remains as a pending site. Tunnels are treated as structures rather than buildings because they are not designed for continuous occupancy or direct use; their function is to transit and to alter terrain.

Practical notes and strategic uses:

  • Completing a tunnel triggers an explosion that only affects terrain and not the builder units completing it. Use this to clear individual blocks without risking workforce.
  • The automatic platform that appears after a tunnel completes supports existing constructions above the removed block. Demolish the platform if you wish to remove that support, but be aware this can cause cascading demolitions, particularly when many overhanging Terrain Blocks rely on the platform for support.
  • Tunnels enable novel blasting strategies because they allow you to place demolition sites without first demolishing the overlying terrain. By combining tunnels and dynamite, you can create large unsupported chunks of terrain that are held only by temporary platforms; demolishing those platforms then causes the remaining terrain to collapse and be removed.
  • Placing a tunnel site above-level is possible, but any structure directly beneath the site cannot be demolished until the tunnel construction is either completed or cancelled.
  • Treat tunnels as a landscaping tool rather than a utility or habitation structure; their primary role is terrain modification and facilitating controlled use of explosives or support removal.

These facts describe how tunnels function and how they are used in terrain manipulation and demolition strategies within the game.
