Liceloaf

liceloaf

Overview

Liceloaf is a food item created by processing Meal Lice in a Microbe Musher. It appears as a mid-game, dirt-based alternative to conventional farmed foods and occupies a niche where water is scarce but Dirt is abundant. The item provides calories for Duplicants and can be eaten raw or stored; its crafting does not require the Cooking skill but takes a relatively long production time.

Liceloaf production converts Meal Lice (and associated inputs) into a loaf that yields 500 kcal per 50 kg of water-equivalent processing input, making its caloric efficiency lower than Bristle Blossom crops (which convert the same mass into 833.3 kcal of Gristle Berry). Because Liceloaf relies on Meal Lice and Dirt rather than irrigated farming, it is particularly useful in dry starts or biomes where water is limited but Dirt is plentiful. The Microbe Musher recipe does not demand the Cooking skill, so any Duplicant can produce Liceloaf once the machine and recipe are available.

When using Liceloaf as part of a base food strategy, note the trade-offs: production time is longer than simple raw-food options, and the caloric density is modest. If water must be conserved and Dirt is abundant, Meal Lice and Liceloaf are a valid early-to-mid game food source; otherwise, farming Bristle Blossoms or other high-yield crops will feed Duplicants more efficiently per unit of water. Pickling Meal Lice (to make Pickled Meal Lice) or other preservation options can extend shelf life but do not increase base caloric value.

Practical points and interactions:

  • Liceloaf is produced in the Microbe Musher from Meal Lice; the process takes longer than some other food production chains but bypasses the Cooking skill requirement.
  • Producing Liceloaf effectively converts 50 kg input into 500 kcal; compare this to Bristle Blossom farming for efficiency decisions.
  • Favor Liceloaf when starting in arid biomes or when water is a scarce resource and Dirt is plentiful.
  • Meal Lice can also be eaten raw; if water is limited and speed is important, raw Meal Lice are a reasonable stopgap.
  • Liceloaf does not itself introduce special disease behavior beyond the usual food handling mechanics; ensure proper storage and preservation if long-term stockpiles are intended.
