Grubfruit Preserve

Grubfruit Preserve is a cooked food made from Grubfruit and Sucrose. It is the higher-quality preserved version of Grubfruit, turning a very perishable crop into a much more stable meal with a long shelf life. Compared with the raw fruit, it is also much more calorie-dense and is one of the main reasons to grow Grubfruit instead of using the crop directly.

A standard batch is made from 2000 kcal of Grubfruit and 4000 g of Sucrose, producing 2400 kcal of Grubfruit Preserve. The food has a shelf life of 32 cycles and provides Good [+3] Food Quality. On average, this works out to 300 kcal per cycle, meaning about 3.33 Grubfruit Plants can feed one Duplicant when the crop is converted into preserve. This makes it significantly more practical for long-term storage than raw Grubfruit, which has a much shorter shelf life.

Grubfruit itself is one of the least calorie-dense foods in the game, with only 250 kcal per kg, so preserving it is important if it is being used as a staple food. The preserve also avoids one of the crop’s biggest weaknesses: Grubfruit spoils after only 4 cycles, which makes harvesting schedules and storage timing much more demanding. In contrast, Grubfruit Preserve gives enough time to transport, store, and ration the food more safely.

Grubfruit Preserve can be cooked at the Electric Grill and the Gas Range. The Electric Grill recipe uses 2000 kcal Grubfruit and 4 kg Sucrose. The Gas Range recipe uses 1000 kcal Grubfruit, 3 Sucrose, and 2000 kcal from the remaining ingredient inputs to make 4200 kcal of preserve, making the Gas Range version much more calorie-efficient when the ingredients are available. Grubfruit also appears in Mixed Berry Pie, but preserve is the more direct upgrade for making the crop useful as a stored food supply.
