Overview

Berry Sludge is a high-end meal that can be produced in the Microbe Musher. It is notable for never spoiling, which makes it one of the best long-term food options in the game, especially for late-game colonies and extended space missions. It also provides a morale bonus, so it serves as both a preservation solution and a premium meal.

Each Berry Sludge requires 5 Sleet Wheat Grain and either 1 Bristle Berry or 2 Pikeapple as ingredients, with a total food value of 1600 kcal per unit. Because it is made from farmed crops rather than raw hunting or more complex industrial processing, it can become a reliable renewable staple once the necessary agricultural setup is available. The recipe is available in the Microbe Musher, and no special storage requirement is needed to keep it fresh since it does not spoil at all.

Its greatest strength is longevity. In the base game, that makes it valuable as an emergency reserve and a convenient way to stabilize food logistics. In the DLC, it is especially strong for long rocket voyages, where food that never spoils and still contributes morale is extremely useful. Compared with other preserved foods such as Pickled Meal and Grubfruit Preserve, Berry Sludge is much better for very long-term storage, since those alternatives still expire after 32 cycles. Pickled Meal also carries a poor quality penalty, making Berry Sludge the better option whenever its ingredients can be supported.

  • Requires a Microbe Musher to craft.
  • Uses Sleet Wheat Grain plus either Bristle Berry or Pikeapple.
  • Provides 1600 kcal per unit.
  • Never spoils.
  • Gives a morale bonus.
  • In the DLC, it is one of the best choices for long-duration rocket travel.

Berry Sludge can also be used as a colony battery, but this requires a landing platform and the footprint can become large. It also lacks automation ports, which limits how it can be integrated into automated setups.

Its immunity to spoilage may be a reference to the old joke that fruitcake lasts forever, although its practical role in the game is more closely tied to pemmican-style preserved food.
