Ornate Crate

An Ornate Crate is a rare locked storage crate found throughout the facility and several Portal World areas. It is placed in hard-to-notice locations, often tucked into side rooms, vehicle interiors, rooftops, or other out-of-the-way spots, and it cannot be crafted. To open one, an Ornate Key is required.

Once unlocked, the crate can be looted for valuable combat supplies and a guaranteed Sigil of the Hearth. Its contents can include Gun Repair Kits and several types of ammunition, making it one of the more rewarding containers to search for during exploration. After it has been opened, the crate can also be packaged and reused as a storage crate, retaining the same storage capacity and radiation shielding as a Hazard Crate.

Known contents include:

• Sigil of the Hearth — 100%
• Light Gun Repair Kit — 2 guaranteed, with a chance for a third
• .357 Magnum Ammo — 3 guaranteed, with a chance for 3 to 5 total
• 9mm Ammo — 8 guaranteed, with a chance for 8 to 12 total
• 12g Buckshot — 5 guaranteed, with a chance for 5 to 8 total
• .308 Ammo — 4 guaranteed, with a chance for 4 to 7 total

Ornate Crates appear in a number of locations across the game. Examples include the Praetorium armory, where the crate respawns on Portal World resets, and several spots in Manufacturing West such as the truck at the crossroads near the Crane, the Mapping Center, and the area near the Synchrotron. They also appear in Cascade Laboratories at the entrance to the Control Center’s main atrium.

In Hydroplant, one crate is found on top of the large building where a Composer is fighting Order troops, with access possible by climbing the Transformers building and jumping across, or by using a Jetpack. Another is located beside the guard post in front of the Waterfall Apartments at the far end of the dam, near the reset terminal for the spillway computers. In the Reactors area, one can be found in the sewers in Power Services and requires Antethermite to reach, while others are placed near the Dusk Reactor activation button and in the machine gun emplacement in Cloud Reactor.
