Ornate Crate

An Ornate Crate is an ornamented container used for transporting valuable artefacts. It appears throughout the facility and is specially locked: an Ornate Key is required to unlock and open it. Once unlocked and looted, the crate can be packaged and re-used as a storage crate; its storage capacity and radiation shielding are equivalent to a Hazard Crate. Ornate Crates cannot be obtained through Crafting.

The contents are fixed to a narrow, high-value loot table. Each Ornate Crate always contains the Sigil of the Hearth. It also contains repair kits and assorted ammunition with stacked quantity chances: Light Gun Repair Kits appear as 2 guaranteed, with a 50% chance to contain 3; .357 Magnum appears as 3 guaranteed, with a 50% chance to contain 3–5; 9mm appears as 8 guaranteed, with a 50% chance to contain 8–12; 12g Buckshot appears as 5 guaranteed, with a 50% chance to contain 5–8; .308 appears as 4 guaranteed, with a 50% chance to contain 4–7.

Ornate Crates are placed in discrete, often tucked-away locations across multiple facility zones. Notable spawn points include:

• Manufacturing West: inside the truck at the crossroads next to the Crane; in the Mapping Center where a Captain and a Grunt attempt to open a sealed door; near the Synchrotron.
• Cascade Laboratories: Control Center at the entrance to the main atrium.
• Hydroplant: on the roof of a large building where a Composer is fighting Order troops (access by climbing the Transformers building and jumping across, or by using a Jetpack); next to the guard post in front of the Waterfall Apartments near the dam, close to the spillway computer reset terminal.
• Reactors: inside the Power Services sewers (requires Antethermite to access); nearby the Dusk Reactor activation button; in the machine gun emplacement in Cloud Reactor.
• Praetorium: within the Praetorium armory — this particular crate will respawn on Portal World Resets.

Practical notes for acquiring and using Ornate Crates:

• Always carry an Ornate Key if you plan to collect one; the crate cannot be opened without it.
• After opening, package the crate for extra portable storage and radiation protection equivalent to a Hazard Crate.
• Check small or obscured spaces and elevated rooftop areas when searching; some crates are deliberately placed out of immediate sight.
• Use a Jetpack or route via adjacent rooftop climbs to reach crates placed on high structures in Hydroplant.
• Bring Antethermite when searching Power Services sewers in the Reactors area, as access is locked by that requirement.
• Because one spawn in the Praetorium respawns on Portal World Resets, that location is useful for repeated retrievals of the crate’s fixed rarities.
