Reactors

Overview

The Reactors are the deep, heavily fortified energy sector of the GATE Cascade Research Facility. Centered on a Reactor Complex that supplies the Facility and provides ignition power for an experimental Fusion Generator, the area serves as both a power hub and a contested battleground between Gatekeepers, The Order, and hostile Anteverse organisms. The complex contains multiple named reactor subsectors — Wave, Dusk, Gale, Mist and Cloud — and houses WG‑INTRADOS, a classified Flowing Liquid Lithium Plasma–Facing Torodial Tokomak fusion installation that links to the Shadowgate Facility.

The sector sits beneath the Hydroplant and is physically extensive: it includes a dedicated tram system, a roadway network for logistics, a vehicle garage at the Reactor Observation entry, and interconnecting water mains and pipes that provide useful shortcuts. The Reactors area is where players first face Gatekeepers protecting the site; their presence shapes both combat pacing and access to secure zones. Several NPCs who appear through the Cascade campaign operate or hide within the sector, including Abe Stern and Janet Ross among others.

Navigation and important locations are distributed across distinct subsectors. Power Services sits directly below the Hydroplant and routes Reactor output to Cascade. Reactor Observation is the usual entry point and contains the tram hub, observation consoles for reactor status, a garage with all vehicle types, and three water pipes linking to other facility areas; the Tram Station has two tramlines: Dusk↔Gale and Cloud↔Mist (individual tram connections may be disrupted). Dusk Reactor resembles an office complex with a clinic and labs and is a common early encounter zone. Cloud Reactor is a cavernous waste storage and reprocessing facility saturated with radioactive runoff and contested by The Order and Gatekeepers. Mist Reactor is overgrown and shrouded in dense spore clouds; visibility is poor and Anteverse entities are widespread. Gale Reactor is built above an underground lake and is difficult to reach when its tramline is broken.

WG‑INTRADOS sits at the heart of the sector and contains the classified fusion reactor; access requires Gatekeeper clearance or higher and the room is notably free of Gatekeeper forces.

Enemies and hazards are numerous and varied: Gatekeepers (Neophyte, Mystagogue, Jotun, Chieftain) and The Order (Grunt, Breacher, Captain, Sniper, Lab Rat, Sapper) contest key zones; Anteverse forces and corrupted robots proliferate in overgrown and irradiated areas. Other high-threat creatures include Zombies, Behemoth, Darkwater Beast and Reapers (during certain activations such as Gale Reactor). Environmental dangers include heavy radiation in Cloud and certain lab areas, thick spore clouds in Mist that obscure sight, and treacherous traversal where tramlines are broken or overgrown.

Practical notes and strategies:

  • Use Reactor Observation as a staging area: the garage supplies vehicles and the tramlines reduce traversal time when functional.
  • Activate Gale Reactor’s connection by first exploring the underwater cave below the reactor; water pipes and flow transit conduits provide alternate shortcuts to connected facility rooms.
  • Expect faction warfare in Cloud and Gale; plan for engagements against both Gatekeepers and The Order simultaneously.
  • Overgrowth and spore clouds in Mist limit visibility and favor long‑range or area‑effect tools; Corrupted Robots and Lab Rats are common here.
  • Radioactivity in Cloud and some Buoyancy Lab routes requires protective planning or brief, tactical incursions.
  • Several quest NPCs and key items spawn in sector subsectors; clear paths and secure tram access before moving heavy cargo or attempting WG‑INTRADOS access.
