Overview

Rise, formally the GATE Rise Bio-Laboratory, is a Portal World centered on GATE's research into biotechnology, virology, genetics and related fields. The player can access only the top level and the roof; by the time Rise becomes available it is already infested by Order forces. The site functions as one of the more dangerous Portal Worlds: dead GATE staff are scattered through the indoor areas, Order combatants occupy key choke points, and the roof hosts an Order helicopter with a Grunt manning a stationary weapon.

Access to Rise is granted via the portal that appears at the Lens Epicentre after solving the laser lab puzzle in the Adjustment Wing of Cascade Laboratories. The laser puzzle can be completed by burning off the invasive goo with the appropriate tool; alternative puzzle solutions may use other items that perform the same function.

Combat encounters in Rise commonly include Grunts, Captains, Breachers, Snipers and Lab Rats. Expect a Breacher near the spawn point and Snipers positioned to cover the approach to the executive office. The rooftop area is guarded and contains the helicopter, which presents both a tactical obstacle and a vantage point for enemy fire.

Loot and collectibles are present but often tucked into corners or behind obstacles. A noted collectible lies under the rooftop helicopter pad beside a support beam. Rise is the first Portal World observed to have respawning medkits on walls, which makes certain medical supplies such as Bandages, Healing Syringes, Splints and Iodine Tablets renewable within this area. Several corpses of interest are present for lore or scavenging: a Keystone member in the supervisor's office and an unarmed United States Army soldier in a restroom near a Breacher.

Security Wood Crates and Rooks that drop related supplies or items appear in multiple locations associated with Rise and other connected zones. Notable spawn points and crate locations referenced in walkthrough material include:

  • Inside a small cave where P. Dupont is found (Voussoir).
  • Two crate respawns scattered through The Night Realm.
  • Reactors: near trucks on the road; beside a flipped truck where the road is broken; in the Gale Reactor area where Gatekeepers and the Order clash, close to corpses on the Order side.
  • Office Sector: a small resting area close to the cafeteria kitchen (Power Your Science); Office Sector level 2 adjacent to the Security Office and next to the Maintenance Lift to Level 3 (Resting is Essential); Office Sector level 3 in the Silo 2 Lounge (Portal Worlds).
  • Manufacturing West: the kitchen next to the Supply Room (Forklift Certification); Lot Oversight's small office near the Foundry where The Blacksmith is (Trams, Trams, Trams!); the Alloy Handling building up the stairs near the large gate (Standby).
  • Cascade Laboratories: Containment Block Baird (the cell encountered with Dr. Cahn; the cell unlocks later when the security system is reset).
  • Reactors: "This is a black clearance sector" area, in the Waygate Control room, accessible after disabling electricity (Standby).
  • Dusk Reactor: inside a locked office reachable through an air vent hidden behind two crates and a fan that turns off at night (Gatekeepers: Allies in Science).
  • Shadowgate: within IS-0117's containment area, tucked near a Military Cot by the garage entrance (Static).
  • Residence Sector: within the barracks (???).

Players should prepare for heavy resistance and limited access routes when exploring Rise. Use ranged suppression or stealth to deal with Snipers and rooftop defenders, sweep interior rooms carefully for corpses and supplies, and solve the Cascade Laboratories laser puzzle to reach the portal. Breaking Security Wood Crates and defeating Rooks in the listed locations yields additional supplies valuable for survival in Rise and linked areas.
