Overview

Albatross is a secluded island location in Abiotic Factor, formally identified as the GATE Finial Observation Facility. Publicly, it presents itself as an ornithological research station, but in practice it is a GATE outpost built around a powerful nexus of geomagnetic and telluric forces. The site is a crescent-shaped island surrounded by frigid water, with several ruined structures scattered across the landscape and a strong supernatural presence tied to the Unlost.

The island is divided into a few distinct points of interest. One end contains a GATE facility with a toilet and an unopenable door. Near the center is a ruined church where Albert Cahn and Ulrich Thule are found. Lower on the island sits a boathouse that contains a portal back to Fragments. The far end features a lighthouse that can be climbed, and nearby is a ritual circle with an interactable rock, where the Sister of the Unlost and the Mage of the Unlost appear. Jotun of the Unlost can initially be seen standing on a barricade, while the Chieftain of the Unlost is found on a rock close to the lighthouse. If Kylie Muir’s quest has been completed, she also appears here. After the fight, Lenora Riggs appears by the black spires, and Janet Ross can be found on the lighthouse deck without Abe Stern.

Albatross is not entirely hostile at first. The Unlost guard the island, but the area is otherwise peaceful until the ritual stone is activated after speaking with Cahn, which triggers the final fight with IS-0117. During this encounter, flight orbs spawn around the island to help with movement, making vertical and fast traversal much easier than normal.

The island also has a unique environmental effect. It grants the Familiar Presence buff, which slows stamina drain while running and jumping. This is tied to changes in EKG patterns caused by the island’s effect on the heart, producing a steadier rhythm. At the same time, the surrounding water is extremely dangerous: although the player can normally swim, Albatross’s water is too cold to safely enter, even with cold resistance gear. Stepping into it inflicts heavy damage each second, functioning much like an electrified pool.

Lore found in the GATE facility’s internal records identifies Albatross as a Nexus for Anteverse portals. The leylines beneath the island suggest that it is an exceptionally strong Nexus, reportedly far more powerful than Flathill. The GATE Compendium also describes the site as being chosen because of an extraordinary convergence of geomagnetic and telluric forces offshore and beneath the seabed, making it one of the most intense known surface-level force nexuses on Earth.
