Overview

Chieftains are elite Gatekeeper commanders encountered in the field and in Gatekeeper strongholds. They are more skilled and resilient than rank-and-file Neophytes, combining rapid reflexes, evasive mobility and a wider array of attacks to pressure and overwhelm players. Visually they match the Neophyte build and outfit but are distinguished by a painted ram’s skull mounted on their helmet and by carrying a handgun instead of an automatic rifle. In lore, Chieftains are senior Phyters who have passed the Gatekeepers’ trials and are expected to prevail under nearly any circumstance.

Chieftains use a mix of ranged and melee tactics. Their attack repertoire includes multiple rapid handgun shots that can inflict Severe Bleeding, thrown frag grenades, and several close-quarters moves: kick, pistol-whip with the gun butt, and a grab that leads to a vicious headbutt if successful. In combat they favor maintaining distance, using side jumps and combat rolls to dodge incoming fire or to reach opponents behind cover; when cornered they will resort to melee attacks.

  • Combat behavior and defensive traits:

    • On engaging, a Chieftain will activate a Hardlight shield that envelops their body; this shield must be broken before most attacks can harm them. However, Chieftains can sometimes be damaged or killed if players catch them entirely off guard and attack before the shield is deployed.
    • They behave similarly to Neophytes in many respects but wield a more powerful handgun and show greater tactical awareness.
    • Chieftains are hostile to anything that is not a Gatekeeper, Defense Robot, or Corrupted Robot, and they will attempt to alert nearby Gatekeepers when able.
  • Tactical notes for players:

    • Prioritize breaking the Hardlight shield before committing sustained fire. If you can approach undetected, you may be able to inflict damage before the shield appears.
    • Mobility and cover are important; expect Chieftains to dodge and reposition. Flanking or using area denial can limit their evasive options.
    • Acid-based weapons and effects are particularly effective against a vulnerable Chieftain and will significantly increase damage when the shield is down.
  • Drops and harvestables:

Chieftains may appear alone or near other Gatekeepers and sometimes murmur to themselves; encountering one often signals nearby Gatekeeper activity. Their combination of shielding, agility, and mixed attacks makes them a mid-to-high threat that rewards careful preparation and swift disruption of their defenses.
