An advancement on the original G.A.S.S. 'Security Bot' designed by Dr. Alice Mayfield and Dr. Stewart Wakeman, the Gate Automated Defense Droid is a militarized prototype currently undergoing field tests.

Deployed prematurely during the Order's invasion, the unit's friend/foe distinction capabilities are a work in progress. Notably, the tendency of its rear power unit to explode under heavy damage is yet to be rectified.

Overview

The Defense Bot is a militarized prototype robot (G.A.D.D.) developed as an evolution of the original G.A.S.S. Security Bot by Dr. Alice Mayfield and Dr. Stewart Wakeman. Deployed prematurely during the Order's invasion, it is undergoing field tests and appears across Security Sector areas where wrecked units are common. The unit patrols day and night, does not spawn from Charging Pods, and is hostile to all entities it detects: Order soldiers, the player, and player-placed Deployable Objects near its patrol path.

The Design and armament combine features of the Security Robot and the Containment Robot with distinct changes: a red accent color, a grenade launcher mounted on the right hand replacing the taser, a Rear Power Unit on its back (glowing grilles and stamped with an Explosives Material Hazard sign) in place of the normal soda dispenser, and extra thigh armor plating. It can sprint when engaged in combat and may choose long-range or close-range approaches depending on distance to a target; once close it immediately begins using explosives and frequently repositions between attacks.

Its offensive repertoire makes it dangerous at any range. Melee and ranged attacks include Cannon Punch (melee arm swing), Cannon Lunge (melee lunge that rapidly moves the robot forward), Frag Grenade (fires multiple grenades in succession), Molotov (exploding projectile that creates a burning zone and ignites targets), and Mortar (high-arc explosive with large splash damage). The robot will often squat facing its target when preparing attacks and cannot move while attacking; it is also resistant to staggering while in that position.

Combat and tactical notes:

  • The Defense Bot can spot enemies from farther distances than other robots and will only attempt melee when targets are extremely close; staying up close forces it to rely on melee attacks.
  • Torso health reaching zero does not immediately kill the unit. Further damage to the torso then applies to the head health pool; hitting the torso effectively means the unit has 1000 effective torso health. To end the fight more quickly, target the eye (counts as the head) or the backpack Rear Power Unit.
  • The Rear Power Unit is a critical weakness: when sufficiently damaged it emits a distinct deep "beep", its lights flash and it sounds an alarm before violently self-destructing. Triggering this sequence will destroy the Defense Bot regardless of its remaining health, but the explosion is lethal at close range and the robot continues attacking during the alarm—retreat to a safe distance after triggering.
  • Unlike some Gate robots, Defense Bots do not inflict an electrical stun with melee attacks; their melee can be blocked.
  • If avoidance is preferred, the Defense Bot can be drawn away or baited to engage other enemies; certain equipment can help distract or survive encounters.

Drops and salvage:

Additional notes:

  • The unit is listed in the GATE Compendium as Gate Automated Defense Droid and is described as a militarized prototype with an unresolved tendency for the Rear Power Unit to explode under heavy damage.
  • Some UI bug prevents weaknesses, resistances, and immunities from displaying correctly in the Compendium.
  • Two Defense Bots can be observed near a Jotun on a hill in the Cloud Reactor area.
