Carbuncle
DESIGNATION: Sanc (AG/IN)
CONTAINMENT PROTOCOLS: IS-0171-A is to be isolated by a perimeter cordon with a radius of 12ft or greater at all times. No personnel may approach within 10ft unless wearing full face and body protective wear conforming to GISP bio-protective standards at all times. Full decontamination required on all equipment exposed to IS-0171-A.
Originating in Anteverse 2 IS-0171 is a stationary, sessile entity that traps its food with a retractable tentacle. Although highly aggressive, the creature is more of an encumbrance than a threat to larger prey.
Overview
Carbuncle is a stationary creature found in Abiotic Factor. It is most dangerous when it has line of sight to a target, at which point it attacks by throwing out a tentacle that grabs the player and slowly pulls them closer while dealing minor damage. Because it does not actively chase prey and is relatively harmless when encountered alone, it is more of an obstacle than a serious threat to larger targets.
Carbuncles will attack the player or other hostile enemies within range if they are spotted, but they ignore Pest, Peccary, and
A Carbuncle can be dealt with very easily if you pay attention to its sounds. Ranged attacks of any kind can kill it quickly, while sneaking up and stomping it lets the player finish it without using weapons. A net can also be used to render it helpless, making close-range cleanup much safer.
When harvested, Carbuncle always drops Raw Carbuncle.
- Listen for its audio cues; they make it much easier to notice before it becomes a problem.
- Ranged weapons are an efficient way to remove it from a distance.
- If you want to conserve ammo or avoid combat noise, sneaking and stomping is a reliable kill method.
- Nets are useful for disabling it, especially when it has spawned in an awkward position.
- Its stationary behavior means positioning matters more than movement when fighting it.
The GATE Compendium identifies it as IS-0171-A and describes it as a sessile entity originating in Anteverse 2 that traps food with a retractable tentacle. Its containment instructions emphasize isolation and protective equipment, reflecting the creature’s aggressive feeding method rather than its actual danger level to equipped personnel.
The Carbuncle’s name is based on a cluster of boils caused by a bacterial skin infection, which matches some of its visual characteristics. Its design also appears to draw inspiration from the Barnacle in the Half-Life series, since both are stationary aliens that catch prey with a long, thin appendage.
