Carbuncle
DESIGNATION: Sanc (AG/IN)
CONTAINMENT PROTOCOLS: IS-0171-A is to be isolated by a perimeter cordon with a radius of 12ft or greater at all times. No personnel may approach within 10ft unless wearing full face and body protective wear conforming to GISP bio-protective standards at all times. Full decontamination required on all equipment exposed to IS-0171-A.
Originating in Anteverse 2 IS-0171 is a stationary, sessile entity that traps its food with a retractable tentacle. Although highly aggressive, the creature is more of an encumbrance than a threat to larger prey.
Overview
Carbuncle is a stationary, sessile creature designated IS-0171-A (Sanc, AG/IN) that originates from Anteverse 2. It captures prey with a retractable tentacle which it flings to grab targets, slowly pulling them toward its body and dealing a small amount of damage. Although it is described as highly aggressive, Carbuncle functions more as an encumbrance than a lethal threat to larger prey and is relatively harmless when encountered alone. Carbuncle will attack players and other hostile enemies in line of sight and range, but it ignores

Carbuncle is treated as a biohazard in containment protocols. Standard procedure requires isolation behind a perimeter cordon with a radius of 12 ft (approximately 3.6 m) or greater. No personnel may approach within 10 ft (about 3 m) unless wearing full face and body protective wear conforming to GISP bio-protective standards, and any equipment exposed to Carbuncle must undergo full decontamination.
Practical notes for encountering and defeating Carbuncle:
- Carbuncle is immobile; attacks come from its tentacle reach. Maintaining distance neutralizes most of its offensive capability.
- All types of ranged attacks reliably kill Carbuncle. Its lack of mobility makes it vulnerable to projectile, energy, and thrown weapons.
- Stealth approaches that allow a sneak attack or stomping can kill Carbuncle without expending weapons.
- Carbuncle can be rendered incapacitated using a net.
- Because of its grabbing and pull mechanic, avoid being caught by staying out of tentacle range or breaking line of sight; the pull deals only minor damage but can disrupt movement.
- Carbuncle spawn points can be unusual; they may appear on narrow or elevated geometry such as office railings, so check ledges and railings when searching an area.
Loot and harvest:
- Carbuncle yields Raw Carbuncle with a 100% drop chance when harvested.
Design and inspiration:
- Carbuncle’s documented behavior and appearance led to containment classification and detailed quarantine procedures in the GATE compendium entry IS-0171-A. Visual and functional similarities to other stationary latching creatures have been noted, but the formal designation and containment requirements emphasize its status as a biohazard rather than a widespread lethal threat.
