Overview

Tainted Carbuncle is a stationary creature variant of the Carbuncle found in Abiotic Factor. Like the normal Carbuncle, it attacks by latching onto a hostile target with a tentacle, but this variant deals additional poison damage. It behaves as a fixed ambush predator rather than a mobile enemy, making awareness and positioning the main factors in dealing with it.

It can be dispatched safely by sneaking up on it, since it makes a distinct sound that gives away its presence. Carbuncle Crown and Carbuncle Crest will cause it to ignore the player entirely, allowing it to be bypassed without combat. When harvested, it drops Raw Carbuncle at a 100% chance.

  • Stationary enemy that attacks by attaching a tentacle to its target
  • Deals poison damage in addition to the normal Carbuncle behavior
  • Can be avoided by sneaking up on it
  • Carbuncle Crown and Carbuncle Crest prevent it from targeting the player
  • Drops Raw Carbuncle guaranteed on harvest

The name is a reference to a cluster of boils caused by a bacterial skin infection, matching the creature’s diseased appearance. Its design also strongly resembles the Barnacle from the Half-Life series, since both are stationary aliens that seize prey with a long, thin tongue.
